There´s no doubt about it: Hispanics are growing in numbers – and importance – in the U.S.A. Hollywood, in this case HBO, is paying close attention to the 60 million who make up the nation’s largest ethnic minority group. In its first ever Spanish-language programming experiment, the network recently produced a horror comedy called Los Espookys, with Spanish dialogue and English subtitles.

Near the end of its evening newscast Telemundo, NBC’s Spanish-language affiliate network, recently had the temerity to treat its viewership to two and a half minutes of good news. Three cheers for a buoyant economy in which Latinos make up 63% of new homeowners in the United States.

The Trump Administration’s announcement of massive deportations threw the nation´s liberal Spanish-speaking media into a panic last week. Wide-eyed newscasters provided all sorts of advice on how to react to the raids and evade law enforcement.

 As soon as Trump announced his re-election campaign, CNN en Español knew it had its topic for its weekly program “Choque de Opiniones”, which displayed a false sense of non partisanship between the special guests. But at times, anti-Trump snark took precedence over substantive policy discussions.

Telemundo and Univision combined to spend almost five minutes reporting on the findings of a new Pew Center study regarding the growth of the Hispanic population in the United States. Appropriate coverage, one might say, for the nation’s leading news purveyors to the aforementioned segment of the population that, according to both reports, hit the 60 million mark.
