Even though violent rap lyrics are generally ignored, in this case one artist took his love of assault too far for makeup company Cover Girl.
In an Instagram video released by rapper Young Thug in early June, the 2 minute clip promoted his new album Beautiful Thugger Girls. The clip showed a young woman assaulted by a group of women wearing masks, who hit her repeatedly with weapons -- including a baseball bat -- until she is bruised and bleeding. She is then put in the back of a van, carried into a basement, tied up with ropes, and covered with duct tape. On the duct tape on her face, the assaulters wrote the words, “Easy, Breezy, Beautiful Thugger Girl.” Cover Girl’s slogan is “Easy, Breezy, Beautiful Cover Girl.”
According to Billboard, “the women being beat up are being “initiated” into the beautiful thugger girls clan.” Regardless of what the situation is supposed to be, it looks like Young Thug is promoting extreme, abusive behavior and criminal assault. In some of his songs on this album, he talks about stabbing and killing repeatedly.
In the song, “Family Don’t Matter,” he seems to call upon Satan to help him with killing.
“Satan, abracadabra
Abracadabra, kill all you bastards.”
In yet another song, “Tomorrow Til Infinity,” the rapper talks about stabbing people multiple times with the lyrics:
“Bitch, I keep a knife like Michael Myers
I was ‘bout to stab ‘em thirty times like porcupines.”
So it really should come as no surprise that the promo video would actually be centered around violence. It seems like the album’s primary focus includes an element of assault. In fact, both fans and CoverGirl found both the lyrics and the video too intense for them: CoverGirl released a statement, according to Cosmopolitan, denying any relation to Young Thug’s project, which originally was entitled Eazy, Breezy, Beautiful Thugger Girls. The rapper changed the title of the album shortly after this statement was released.
Looks like somebody crossed the line.
