We’ve heard lots of assertions from the media about who Trump voters are: poorly-educated, racist, and authoritarian-leaning. Now Salon is adding to the rich stock of disdaining assumptions. The Trump-voting conservative, says the site, is a washed-up, lonely loser whose disconnect from reality and the rest of society inspired him to spite the democratic process. Might they add he can’t get a girlfriend.
The clinicians over at Salon consulted a 2017 Gallup poll that stated that nearly half of U.S. states "saw their well-being scores decline by a statistically significant margin in 2017," while none of the 50 states "saw statistically significant improvement from the year before.”.
That includes, “an increase in experiencing significant worry on any given day,” “a decline in reports of receiving ‘positive energy’ from friends and family members,” “a drop in reports of liking ‘what you do each day,’ and “a reduction in satisfaction with standard of living (compared to peers.)”
While the Gallup poll did not necessarily break down the demographics as to which which half of Americans were feeling this way, leave it to Salon to point the finger at Trump supporters. I mean, who else would be experiencing the low T required to elect our generation’s next Hitler?
Salon stated that, “This mix of alienation, loneliness, despair and angst provided the perfect breeding ground for the authoritarian populism that Trump rode to victory. Social pathology does not encourage healthy democratic politics: Trumpism is the proof.”’
Still, Salon seemed hopeful that these statistics can help America assess the problem, and turn social rejects from their temptations to elect fascist leaders. It cited Hannah Arendt, who stated, “The ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convinced Nazi or the convinced Communist, but people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction (i.e., the reality of experience) and the distinction between true and false (i.e., the standards of thought) no longer exist.”
Oh you conservatives didn’t want Hillary? The only logical conclusion is that you’re out of touch.
Of course, the only way to bring these downtrodden deplorables back to reality is to nurture and protect the citizens and their democratic values. For Salon, this means no less than forcing progressivism down Americans’ throats. They write, “To that end, social democracy as made real through labor unions, public education, associational life, volunteer work, activism, respect for human rights, a renewed commitment to the arts and participation in local government must be reinvigorated in America.”
Oh, and get a date, losers!
