Usually when you think of comic books you think of action, excitement, and violence but now…. gun-control?
DC Comic’s launched a new gun control themed issue of their comic book Deathstroke. In an interview with The Chicago Tribune, coauthor Denys Cowan said “Gun violence is a human problem” that he and other coauthor Christopher Priest deal with “in the context of a thriller type story.”
This issue revolves around an assassin named Deathstroke who is hired by mothers to avenge the deaths of people killed by gun violence in Chicago. It may take him a while. Of course, Deathstroke is able to take on these villains without the use of a gun.
In a scene with a dead twelve year old child one detective says “I presumed twenty dead first and second graders and six dead teachers, mostly white, killed by the hands of a deranged white man would have had some impact on public policy.”
He adds “I certainly hoped 49 dead kids in a Florida night club would.” The comic is rife with more not so subtle attempts to demonize gun ownership.
When speaking about who is at fault for gun violence, Priest said “we are all to blame. The cops, the gangs, the school system, the economic situation in Chicago, the history of cronyism.”
