We're moving on from Black Lives Matter to Black Voters Matter, thanks to LeBron James and his voter suppression-fighting posse. In conjunction with the More Than A Vote organization, the NBA superstar activist and other woke athletes signed a letter Monday urging African Americans to combat Black voter suppression in 2020.
According to Marc Spears, a writer with the ESPN blog, The Undefeated, the letter is aimed at sports fans of every age, race and gender who've been protesting on the streets and through social media this summer.:
“We saw you in the streets. We saw your social media posts. Your voices are breaking through, but it’s now time to do more. We know you have the ability to organize. So join us and take your protest to the election and fight to keep our community from being silenced.
“The most important thing you all need to know is Black voters matter more than ever.”
And sports fans have seen more than enough of the athletes' social justice shenanigans this summer, too.
More Than A Vote is a nonprofit organization focusing on getting African Americans to the polls, thinly veiled as anti-Trump and pro-Biden.
As Spears explains it, More Than A Vote took shape amid "the current fight against police brutality, social injustice and other racial issues that were sparked after George Floyd, a 46-year-old African American man, died while a white police officer kneeled on his neck for nearly nine minutes on May 25 in Minneapolis." James, who's masterminding this political effort, told The Undefeated:
“This all came together during the protests against police brutality. All of us were angry, which we still are, and wanted to do something with real impact right now. We didn’t want to talk about it. We organized around voter suppression in our community because it’s very real and if we want actual change, it’s going to start by educating, energizing and protecting Black voters in 2020.”
Renee Montgomery, who plays for the Atlanta Dream in the Women's NBA, said athletes have a tradition of speaking out against injustice, and now they're taking it to the next level to fight voter suppression "against Black people in all of the ways it manifests itself.” More Than A Vote will give black voters the tools to fight voter suppression.
The letter signers say voter suppression takes many forms, including disenfranchisement laws, felons not having the right to vote, the impact of COVID-19 on African Americans, the abuse of political power to make voting more difficult and the misinformation intended to intimidate and deceive black citizens. If the intimidation part of this sounds like the New Black Panthers suppressing white voters in Philadelphia in 2008, it's only a coincidence.
The letter states that More Than A Vote is not telling people whom to vote for. However, James (seen in photo) despises President Donald Trump and is openly supporting the Biden-Harris ticket. The WNBA is openly campaigning for the Democrat candidate for U.S. Senate in Georgia. James and his posse are not fooling anybody with claims of bi-partisanship.
The letter, dated August 17, further states that it is attempting to convert "as many arenas and sports facilities as possible into voting precincts.” So far, Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles and three NBA arenas are planning to be converted into polling places in November, thanks to fake "secretary of state" James.
Among current and former athletes who signed the letter are: Patrick Mahomes, Ray Allen, Trae Young, Allyson Felix, Draymond Green, Damian Lillard, Alvin Kamara, Britney Griner, Bobby Wagner, CC Sabathia and several others.
It's all fine and good for athletes to fulfill their civic duty and vote, but many sports fans have already indicated their displeasure with athletes who parade their political activities onto the playing fields and courts.
