Hey, Jeb Bush, the 2016 GOP presidential debates are over, and you lost! So quit trying to score points against Donald Trump by suggesting his immigration policies hurt America’s 2021 Olympic efforts.
Talk about a losing argument, “Low Energy” Jeb implied in a tweet this week that former President Trump’s “exclusionary immigration system” may have harmed America’s medal count in Tokyo. He tweeted:
"I wonder how our medal totals would be if we had an exclusionary system which we have had for all of our medalists. My heart swells for all of our medalists, including those whose families have come from far off lands to love our country."
Is Jeb saying we'd have more medals if not for Trump's immigration policies, or is he saying we'd have fewer if Trump's policies were in effect longer? Hard to know. Either way, it's silly.
As they say … check the scoreboard. The United States has won 98 medals, compared to China’s 70 and Russia’s 62. That portion of the border wall that was actually built on Trump’s watch hasn’t caused a dent in the Americans’ medal haul. Sure, China has won more Gold medals, but the U.S. is far and away the leader in Silvers and Bronzes. Along with the overall total.
Immigration policy has little, if anything, to do with the USA medal count.
Brothers Jeb and former President George W. Bush have both been critical this year of Trump’s get-tough border policies. In fact, border weakness is part of their family business. GW Bush did little, if anything, to strengthen border security during his eight years in the White House.
A few months ago, GW Bush said Republicans are "isolationist, protectionist and, to a certain extent, nativist." Later he said, "Really what I should have said -- there's loud voices who are isolationists, protectionists and nativists, something by the way, I talked about when I was president."
We’re mopping up the competition just fine in the Summer Olympics. The USA also ranks second all-time in Winter Olympics medals won. So let’s not send the bus to the border to load up illegal immigrant athletes.
Yet Jeb Bush thinks that we should relax our immigration laws and open the floodgates on immigration. Just so we can pad our medal totals when there is no guarantee such would be the case. No one has proven a correlation between lax immigration policy and our Olympic medal count.
So Jeb, keep trying to score points on Trump and those “exclusionary” Americans. Rather than speak out against the Biden Administration’s absolute disaster down on our southern border. Weak border policies were wrong-headed in the past and they’re wrong in the present. And please check the medals leader board before inserting foot in mouth.
