NBC’s Blindspot on Wednesday aired its mid-season fall finale “Why Let Cooler Pasture Deform” and finally revealed the motivations behind the American terrorist group Sandstorm: drone attacks in the war in Afghanistan.
A flashback from 2013 shows an injured Jane Doe (Jaimie Alexander) in Afghanistan after being taken in by Dr. Borden (Ukweli Roach) and his wife, Chris (Georgina Reilly), who are working there with Doctors Without Borders. When U.S. soldiers enter the house looking for Jane, Chris is quick to tell them they are making a mess of the country and are the problem, not the terrorist insurgents.
Chris: Can we help you?
Soldier: Strategic Services Division. We need to come inside, ma'am.
Chris: May I ask why?
Soldier: There's been reports of an insurgent hiding in the area.
Chris: My husband and I spend all day cleaning up the mess you're making of this country. You can bloody well stay out of our house.
Soldier: You work at the hospital, correct?
Dr. Borden: Yes, Doctors Without Borders.
Soldier: All right. We need to see your passports. Have you seen this woman, ma'am? She's an American. She may be posing as U.S. Military.
Chris: How do we know you're not posing as U.S. Military?
Dr. Borden: Chris.
Soldier: This is for your own protection, ma'am.
Dr. Borden: For our own protection? Well, why don't you check the hospitals and see all the families who've been blinded and burnt and lost limbs from the ordinance being dropped on them for their "Protection"? The insurgents are not the problem anymore. Now, I think it's time for you to leave.
Later, Jane and Dr. Borden take a walk when an American airstrike occurs, demolishing a farming village and hospital where Dr. Borden’s wife is. Jane pulls him from the area, explaining they were after her and that America has lost its mind and only cares about money and power.
Dr. Borden: Oh, no, I can't-- I can't go any farther. I need to rest, light a fire.
Jane: No, no. We can't do that. They'll spot it.
Dr. Borden: I need a minute. Just... Just a minute.
Jane: All right.
Dr. Borden: Those were American planes. And they-- and they were dropping American bombs on a farming village and a humanitarian aid hospital. And my wife... My wife... Maybe this was a horrible mistake. Or something is very, very wrong.
Jane: It wasn't a mistake. I was part of an unsanctioned black-ops unit called Orion. I thought I was working for the good guys, doing what was right, what official channels couldn't. But good and right were never the objectives-- only money and power-- until someone decided we were a liability, and I watched my entire team get murdered by American drones. The same ones that are doing dead-checks in your village right now. My country has lost its mind, and something has to change.
Dr. Borden: But h-how?
Jane: If we can get back to America, we can fight back, set things right again.
Dr. Borden: But I don't understand. We're just two people.
Jane: No. My family, they're already... There is always something you can do. But we have to keep moving and we have to stand up.
Nothing new here, just more liberal propaganda against the wars in the Middle East and our involvement. And they don’t fail to mention the stereotypical greed and power-hungry people America supposedly represents. We’re always painted as the bad guys, purposely targeting innocent civilians for profit and creating more terrorists than we’re killing through our bombing campaigns.
Anti-America, anti-military – NBC’s Blindspot once again demonstrates its own blind spot for honoring the heroic men and women who have served our country with honor.
