President Donald Trump’s tweets may have been impeded by Twitter filters, but now his Twitter presence may face annihilation if former Vice President Joe Biden takes the presidency.
The media can’t wait for Trump to lose his ability to tweet. The Verge, jumping the gun on claiming Biden has won the election, suggested that “President Donald Trump will lose Twitter privileges he enjoys as a world leader when President-Elect Joe Biden takes office on January 20th, 2021,” The Verge reported on Saturday.
Twitter’s official policy has been to grant special “public interest” immunity to world leaders and government officials. While many of Trump’s recent tweets have been impeded by Twitter, many have ultimately still been viewable because Twitter deemed them necessary to be seen by the public. Liberal news sources like Business Insider, eager to see Trump silenced, has already looked forward to a future where “Trump's account would be subject to suspension and even removal, just like any other account, if he breaks the platform's rules.”
A Twitter spokesperson illustrated to The Verge that the only thing keeping Trump on Twitter is his status as president:
“Twitter’s approach to world leaders, candidates, and public officials is based on the principle that people should be able to choose to see what their leaders are saying with clear context. This means that we may apply warnings and labels, and limit engagement to certain tweets. This policy framework applies to current world leaders and candidates for office, and not private citizens when they no longer hold these positions.”
Liberal media prematurely predicting the destruction of Trump’s Twitter came after weeks of unprecedented forms of Twitter censorship and Democratic leaders calling for Trump to be suspended.
Representative David Cicilline (D-RI) declared that Trump’s Twitter account is “posting lies and misinformation at a breathtaking clip” and called Trump’s online presence a “threat to our democracy” which “should be suspended until all the votes are counted.”
Representative Gerry Connolly (D-VA) had similar demands:
“Suspend his account, @Twitter. This is pure disinformation. Valid votes are being counted.
“This is America, not Russia.”
Booting Trump from the platform entirely would not be out-of-character from Twitter as censorship against him has accelerated exponentially in recent months. Since Nov. 3, Trump’s personal Twitter account had been censored 35 times as he tweeted his concerns regarding ballots and election counts. Overall, Twitter had censored Trump since May 31, 2018, a grand total of 111 times. By contrast, Biden and his campaign have received no forms of censorship or suppression whatsoever.
Calls to censor Trump have flourished as Twitter censored the president multiple times in recent weeks in an entirely new fashion.
Twitter began using a new form of censorship where it makes use of both a warning label and prevents users from liking a post entirely. Twitter began censoring the ability to like tweets with Trump’s October 26 tweet regarding "Big problems and discrepancies with Mail In Ballots." Twitter claimed that this tweet spread information about the election that "is disputed and might be misleading." For the first time with Trump’s tweets, Twitter made sure users could not share or like the tweet.
