Three pro-American organizations flayed an NBC News report last week that called for censorship of text messages in one of the latest leftist rallying cries against so-called “disinformation.”
NBC published a story exaggerating the issue of supposed “disinformation” via text message. It cited a text message campaign that almost ended what it termed “abortion protections” in Kansas to illustrate the point.
Leftists “won't rest until our text messages, television news, personal emails, phone calls—and eventually in-person conversations—are censored to fit their preferred narrative,” Internet Accountability Project (IAP) founder and President Mike Davis wrote in an email. 
American Principles Project (APP) Director of Policy Jon Schweppe said the NBC News story hid its main purpose, “We know what this is really about,” he wrote in an email. “It has nothing to do with ‘disinformation.’ This is about power, about censoring political messages that run counter to the elite consensus, and about rigging elections.”
Media Research Center found in November 2020 that social media censorship helped steal the 2020 election for Joe Biden.
Texas Public Policy Foundation’s (TPPF) Better Tech for Tomorrow Campaign Manager David Dunmoyer told MRC Free Speech America, “To even hint at having government actors review the text messages of hundreds of millions of Americans is not only dystopian, but diametrically contradicts the will of the people.”
NBC News is apparently not content with widespread social media censorship, some of which is allegedly being done in collusion with the U.S. government.
The outlet also cited a former Obama campaign employee to promote its claims about text message “disinformation.” Scott Goodstein “built the bulk text messaging apparatus for Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign,” NBC wrote. He now claims Americans are being bombarded with text message “disinformation.”
NBC noted there is no regulatory agency to monitor text messages and wondered if “political groups that spread text message disinformation” would face any “consequences.” The news outlet did not present a definite solution.
Davis said that censorship advocates will continually call for information to be suppressed in forums beyond merely social media. “Democrats and their liberal media lapdogs will do anything to censor opposing views and silence conservatives who speak out against their intolerance,” he wrote. “Leftists' team effort with their allies in government, tech, and media to quash critical viewpoints during the pandemic should have been a wake-up call.”
TPPF’s Dunmoyer told MRC Free Speech America that 90 percent of likely Texas voters agreed permission should be required for third party data collection and sharing. “We should remain focused on ways to secure the privacy of users, rather than prey on partisanship to push an increased surveillance state,” Dunmoyer said.
“The advent of social media and texting has leveled the playing field in politics and allowed the little guy to finally have a voice,” Schweppe said, adding that this threatens “woke ideologues” and “powerful moneyed interests” who now seek to silence dissent.
“Democracy dies when free speech and free elections cease to exist,” Schweppe concluded. “We can't let that happen.”
