Biased Google’s AI is entering a new phase of online news manipulation.
Google announced various AI updates in an August 15 blog post, including a feature where its generative AI Search experience (SGE) will provide summaries of articles on websites. While Google touts the update as helping users “navigate information online and get to the core of what you’re looking for even faster,” Google has repeatedly shown that it is not a trustworthy or objective source when it comes to news.
“On some web pages you visit, you can tap to see an AI-generated list of the key points an article covers, with links that will take you straight to what you’re looking for directly on the page,” Google explained. “We’ll also help you dig deeper with ‘Explore on page,’ where you can see questions the article answers and jump to the relevant section to learn more.” That is, Google AI will summarize news for users.
But the real question is, can Google’s AI be trusted to give unbiased summaries? Google’s checkered history of flagrant bias seems to give away the answer.
MRC Free Speech America found that Google’s AI chatbot Bard displayed pro-abortion bias when asked whether the Supreme Court decided Roe v. Wade or Dobbs v. Jackson correctly. The chat bot responded that “both sides” in Dobbs had “strong arguments” while calling Dobbs “highly controversial.” In its summary of the pro-life argument made in the majority opinion for Dobs v. Jackson, Google’s chatbot notably omitted the strongest of all: That an abortion ends the life of a defenseless human being.
AI however is not the only area where Google’s bias has reared its ugly head. MRC Free Speech America researchers found Google search results for “pregnancy” propping up Planned Parenthood as the top result days before the March for Life in January and Google ads banned Live Action’s pro-life ads in September 2021.
MRC Free Speech America also did a series of exclusive studies before the 2022 midterm election exposing Google’s search engine bias in favor of Democrats. The studies found that Google manipulated search results to bury Senate Republican candidates’ campaign websites in 83 percent of top Senate races. Similarly, Google’s Gmail was exposed for marking more emails from right-leaning candidates as spam compared to left-leaning candidates.
If Google search and gmail have a track record of being so biased, it’s likely Google search AI will lack objectivity too.
