Senate Democrats have considered bringing several Big Tech leaders to make their way to Capitol Hill again soon to defend their business practices.
Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE), chair of the Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology and the Law, said that he’s “very likely” to call Big Tech executives to testify before the subcommittee, according to Politico.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey have made increasingly common appearances at Capitol Hill hearings. “‘We held hearings in the full committee last year that included one — particularly, famously — [with] Jack Dorsey and Mark Zuckerberg from Twitter and Facebook, and I think there's reason for us to ask them to come before us again,’” Coons reportedly said in an interview.
Coons also reportedly discussed his expectations for the panel. “Coons said he expects the panel will push to bring in top Silicon Valley executives for hearings, including the chiefs of Twitter and Facebook,” Politico reported.
Zuckerberg and Dorsey most recently appeared before the full Senate Judiciary Committee in November 2020. Senate Republicans grilled Twitter in particular for applying its policies in a “partisan and selective manner,” as Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) expressed.
The House Committee on Energy and Commerce has already announced that Dorsey and Zuckerberg will testify alongside Google CEO Sundar Pichai on March 25.
