NewsGuard is trying to establish itself as the gatekeeper of the internet. But its claims of objectivity and neutrality vaporize under the light of scrutiny.
On this week’s episode of CensorTrack with Paiten, I exposed NewsGuard and its checkered past of bias.
PragerU CEO Marissa Streit blasted the website rating firm for appointing themselves as “fact checkers of the internet.”
“They get to decide what is truth and what is false, what is information that the public is allowed to hear and what information the public is not allowed to hear,” she told MRC Free Speech America.
NewsGuard executes its censorship through “Nutrition Labels” on “news and information websites.” The company claims these are designed to help fight so-called "misinformation" and assess a website's credibility.
Liberal media outlets including NBC News, The New York Times and USA Today have cited NewsGuard in the past, attempting to prop it up as a neutral measuring stick for online credibility.
But how can NewsGuard claim to be the neutral measuring stick of internet credibility when its rod is warped with bias? Simple, it can’t.
MRC Free Speech America has repeatedly documented NewsGuard’s bias. In our most recent study, MRC Free Speech America researchers found that the company rated left-leaning media outlets 25 points higher on average than right-leaning media outlets. Talk about glaring bias.
NewsGuard also rated several Chinese Communist Party-controlled media outlets as more credible than independent American outlets such as One America News Network (OANN), Newsmax and LifeNews.
“It just goes to show that [NewsGuard] cannot be trusted, it cannot be trusted as a neutral source and for it to propagate itself as such is just extremely dishonest,” MRC Business and MRC Free Speech America Associate Editor Joseph Vazquez said.
