MRC's Brent Bozell Slams NYT For Smearing Walker as Dumb

July 13th, 2015 4:51 PM

Media Research Center President Brent Bozell appeared on Fox News, Monday, to slam the New York Times for smearing Scott Walker as dumb. After Your World guest host Stuart Varney noted the paper claimed the Republican was "aiming for smart," Bozell informed, "They're targeting every Republican. It's the standard fare for the New York Times.

He added, "Look at the way they treated Ronald Reagan. It's the constant narrative that conservatives really aren't very intelligent people." The MRC president explained that the paper constantly thinks conservatives need "tutorials." Regarding the double standard of how they treat liberals, Bozell joked, "You know, I wish Barack Obama had spent more time on tutorials and less time playing golf. His knowledge of foreign affairs might be enhanced."

STUART VARNEY: Wisconsin's governor, Scott walker, he's set to join a crowded GOP field for president, about two hours from now, formally joining. And already the New York Times is taking a crack at him. Today's headline reads: "Walker viewed as authentic, aims for smart in 2016 race." Is the Times insinuating that he is dumb? To media watcher, Brent Bozell. Brent, that's the way it appears to me, when you put that kind of headline out, it appears to me they're saying Scott Walker's not got it up here. That's what it looks like.

BRENT BOZELL: Well in all fairness to The New York Times, they're not targeting Walker. They're targeting every Republican. It's the standard fare for The New York Times. This goes back – it's not just Walker. Look at the way they're treating Trump. Look at the way they treated Sarah Palin. Look at the way they treated George Bush. Look at the way they treated Ronald Reagan. It's the constant narrative that conservatives really aren't very intelligent people. We found this quote, and you're going to like this, Stuart. This is from the story today talking about Scott Walker and foreign affairs. It says: "Recognizing the problem of not being smart or sophisticated, Mr. Walker has joined in hours long meetings in Washington, Madison, Wisconsin, and elsewhere for tutorials on the Islamic State, Iran, Russia and the military," et cetera, et cetera. This is what the New York Times wrote 15 years about George Bush. They said, according to the New York Times, Condoleezza Rice led a team of advisors "whose mission is to prove Mr. Bush has enough global brain power to be president... Ms. Rice is closest, by far, to Mr. Bush, whom she is leading in a grand, global tutorial." So, when it comes to Republicans, apparently they all need tutorials. You know, I wish Barack Obama had spent more time on tutorials and less time playing golf. His knowledge of foreign affairs might be enhanced.

VARNEY: Now, is it still true to this day that the rest over the establishment media takes its marching ordered from the New York Times? Because it was certainly true for the last generation. Still true today?

BOZELL: I think so. I think he Grey Lady still has that kind of gravitas with the far left in this country. I don't think it's been diminished. It's readership has been diminished, but not its status, and when the New York Times says something, the rest of the media are like E.F. Hutton, they jump and pay attention. So, yeah, the New York Times is powerful. However, I f the Republicans are smart, what they've will do is run against the New York Times. You know, Newt Gingrich won the South Carolina primary by going against the media. When you do that, you can be very successful and, my God, the Republicans have a case.

VARNEY: Okay, Brent Bozell, we hear you. Thanks so much for joining us.
