Over the weekend, a Detroit police officer, Glenn Doss Jr., passed away after being shot while doing his duty late last week, leaving behind his girlfriend, their nine-month-old baby, and his father who is also a police officer.
Among the broadcast networks, the CBS Evening News was alone in giving attention to the story as they initially ran a full two-minute report on Friday after he was injured, and then a brief followup on Monday after his passing.
FNC's Fox and Friends ran two briefs on Thursday morning with two followups on Monday, while the Fox Report on Sunday evening gave the story a brief of just over half a minute.
According to a Nexis search, the story was more buried on CNN which gave the news a total of two briefs which both aired on Monday's Early Start show -- one at 4:25 a.m. and the other at 4:49 a.m. ET.
As CBS host Jeff Glor first brought up the story, he noted: "Our next story is a reminder of the risks police officers take and the sacrifices they and their families make every day of the year."
CBS correspondent Dean Reynolds began his report by recalling that police officers were responding to a domestic dispute. He then added:
Among the officers responding late Wednesday was 25-year-old Glenn Doss -- two years on the force -- and it was Doss dispatchers referred to in the frantic moments after the gunman opened fire.
The report soon played audio of Officer Doss's father reacting to the grim news about his son over the police radio:
My son is an officer in Number Seven, and he has been shot in the head. I'm trying to get to the hospital. ... Tell everyone to please pray for my son. He's only been on the job for two years, and he has been shot in the head. Please pray for my son.
On Monday, Glor informed viewers that there was a vigil for Officer Doss after his passing, and that gunman is facing murder charges.
