Looks like we have a new leader on the left for proponent of this year's most delusional conspiracy theory.
Libtalker Thom Hartmann on his radio show Monday went somewhere you'd otherwise expect to find Occupy squatters reeling from bong hits and railing against the man. (h/t for audio, Brian Maloney at mrctv.org) --
HARTMANN: Call me a conspiracy nut but first came the memo saying that, or it was leaked actually out of the Romney campaign, that they were going to turn Barack Obama into Jimmy Carter. Now what did that mean? Who was planning that? Who, you know, and then comes out this anti-Muhammad movie, just before 9/11, just in time for 9/11. And then the attacks, you know, in Benghazi in, on 9/11. And then Darrell Issa, you know, who's got a history as a small-time crook, is trying to politicize this thing. It makes you wonder who funded the movie. You know, is this thing a setup?
OK -- you're a conspiracy nut.
Uh, how can Republicans "turn Barack Obama into Jimmy Carter" if the two men are already indistinguishable? Dick Morris points out how the parallels between this year's campaign and the 1980 matchup between Carter and Reagan are striking.
Keep in mind that Hartmann is not an unknown left-winger making a strained, ludicrous attempt at drawing shadowy connections. His website boasts that "more people listen to or watch the TH program than any other progressive talk show in the world."
It's also not the first time Hartmann has engaged in sophomoric conspiracy mongering. Back in April, he blamed the Koch brothers, the NRA and Wal-Mart for the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. I didn't think Hartmann could top that one. Turns out, he could.
