Talk about double standards. The liberal media are livid.
It seems that in all the craziness surrounding the indictment, arrest and arraignment of former President Donald Trump, the judge presiding over this circus has, along with his family, been targeted with unwanted publicity. Here’s a sample headline, this one from NBC News:
Trump judge and his family receive threats after New York arrest
Judge Juan Merchan, his family and the Manhattan court where Trump was arraigned Tuesday have already received numerous threats, sources told NBC News.
The NBC story reports this:
Trump and his allies have publicly criticized Merchan and his family, including his adult daughter.
Ahead of his court appearance Tuesday, Trump blasted Merchan on his Truth Social account as a "highly partisan judge" and said the judge and his family are "Trump haters." In the post, Trump said, "HIS DAUGHTER WORKED FOR ‘KAMALA’ & NOW THE BIDEN-HARRIS CAMPAIGN.”
The former president's adult sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, also posted links to stories from conservative outlets focusing on Merchan’s daughter’s employment.
The story linked by Don Jr. is from Breitbart, and the story headline is this:
Daughter of Judge Overseeing Donald Trump’s Case Worked on Biden-Harris Campaign
This story reports:
The daughter of the judge overseeing former President Donald Trump’s case worked on the Biden-Harris campaign, according to a report as well as an online search.
Judge Juan Merchan’s daughter is Loren Merchan, president and partner of Authentic Campaigns, a company that runs digital campaigns for Democrat candidates, according to Merchan’s archived LinkedIn account.
You can wonder why such liberal outrage erupts at the former President and his allies for simply pointing the ties between the judge’s daughter and various progressives.
Which shows nothing as much as the liberal media devotion to double standards. Recall this from a February, 2022 issue of The Washington Examiner. The headline:
The media's war on Clarence and Ginni Thomas
The Examiner story reported this:
For 30 years, Justice Clarence Thomas has remained unbowed by the Left’s political, and often race-based, attacks. With a growing majority of Supreme Court justices more aligned with Thomas’s jurisprudence, and with major rulings coming this spring and next term on abortion, affirmative action, and guns, the attacks on Thomas have focused on his wife, Ginni. Having failed to intimidate Thomas on his judicial opinions, the new tack is aimed at forcing his recusal from cases.
The supposed standards now being applied to Justice Thomas and his wife are either invented from whole cloth or distorted beyond recognition. The New Yorker’s Jane Mayer struck first in late January, continuing her long vendetta against Thomas, dating back to her error-filled 1994 book Strange Justice, which played on the racist tropes that Thomas was merely the black hand puppet of the white Justice Antonin Scalia. Mayer, quickly echoed by journalists from The Washington Post, CNN, The New Republic, ABC, The Nation, and just this week The New York Times, seeks to portray Ginni Thomas’s public policy work as a threat to the Supreme Court in order to pressure Thomas to recuse himself from any case that Ginni, or any of the groups she has worked with, has even commented on.
There’s more there…oh so much more on the attacks in the liberal media against Justice Thomas’s conservative activist wife Ginni.
Which is another way of saying that the liberal media itself green lighted the idea that it is A-OK to zero in on the activities of a judge’s family as a way of making a point that the judge himself should be disqualified from ruling on a case because of a familial conflict of interest.
Now the liberal investigative journalists at ProPublica are painting Justice Thomas as unethical for going on trips with conservative billionaire Harlan Crow. This has been a big issue for liberal Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-Conn.), and the federal judiciary is now requiring more disclosure.
Conservatives could point out that ProPublica's larger donors look like a roll call of leftist foundations, the same kind that love NPR (the original gangsters of anti-Thomas journalism). The list includes the Emerson Collective (run by Laurene Powell Jobs, who owns The Atlantic and has donated to Mother Jones), as well as the Joyce Foundation, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Knight Foundation, and the MacArthur Foundation.
So as the Easter break begins, the land swarmed in chocolate, decorated eggs and bunnies, perhaps it is a good time to reflect on just what the liberal media itself has brought down on the heads of Trump judge Merchan.
Perhaps the most succinct way to summarize this newest imbroglio would be “sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.”
Happy Easter.
