Katie Couric Gushes: ‘Very Progressive’ for ‘Catholic Church to Want to Understand Science!’

On Tuesday night’s Late Show with Stephen Colbert, former network anchor Katie Couric was a guest and she came on to promote her anti-NRA documentary, Under the Gun. But before that, Couric said something truly cringeworthy while she was heaping on praise for the “truly exceptional” Pope Francis.

Shortly into the interview Colbert told Couric that he was “angry” at her for getting to do something he hadn’t yet: meet the Pope. Couric responded, “I did. That was such a thrill,” before explaining she had met him at a recent trip to the Vatican for a scientific conference and this is where the truly face-palm moment came into play.

COURIC: I was at a scientific conference at the Vatican a couple of weeks ago and I thought it was actually very Progressive of the Catholic church to want to understand science....

COLBERT:  Yeah the sun goes around the Earth and everything. But Katie Couric, I want to meet the Pope, too.

Fortunately for Couric, Colbert helped her from digging herself into a deeper hole and she got the chance to expound on how much she loves the often left-leaning pope, right down to how great of eye contact he has and how “soft and warm” his hands are.

COURIC: By the way, don't you love this pope, Stephen?

COLBERT: I do, but are you a Catholic?

COURIC: I am not.

COLBERT: I am.

COURIC: I know!

COLBERT: I think it's a sin you get to meet him before I do.

COURIC: I know, I felt really guilty about that. But can I just tell you, he was-- I mean, this guy brings eye contact to a whole new level. I felt like he was staring into my soul.

Couric later gushed, “His hands were so soft and warm!” and again reiterated that the pope was “such an exceptional figure for the Catholic church.”

Well as long as non-Catholic Katie Couric approves!
