On Monday night’s Full Frontal, Samantha Bee did her usual schtick of taking an issue from the extreme left and running with it. In this case, it was the NRA and “racist Republicans.” In her typical vulgar fashion, Bee called out Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell for supporting the NRA after Orlando’s shooting. Calling McConnell a “puppet of the NRA” she slammed him and “Crazy Wayne” LaPierre, Vice President of the NRA.
Bee first began by talking about gun control and how Republicans as a whole haven’t always been in support of the NRA, referencing Ronald Reagan supporting the Brady Bill while in office.Calling Reagan “prejudiced” Bee claimed his assassination attempt was the only reason he supported the Brady Bill, and most Americans would support gun control if they were shot too.
BEE: Governor Ronald Reagan banned open carry in California as soon as the black panthers discovered it applied to them. Reagan's prejudice was vindicated years later when he was shot by noted panther, John hinckley Jr. But you have to give the gipper credit. He pushed for an assault weapons' ban and in ‘91, he openly flipped off the N.R.A. Nothing like getting shot to put you on the side of gun control. At this rate, most Americans will come around in the next year or two.
Which brought Bee to her point about modern day Republicans supporting the NRA. Because every act of violence is the fault of guns to liberals, Bee won’t call out Democrats for giving money to terrorist-sympathizing group, CAIR, for example.
MITCH MCCONNELL: I can’t imagine that a Republican majority, in the United States Senate, would want to confirm in a lame duck session a nominee opposed by the national rifle association.
BEE: And I can’t imagine that a leader of the senate majority would admit to being a puppet of the NRA in a televised interview! Yet here you are, with crazy Wayne’s fist so far up your party’s ass that he can throw his talking points out your mouths!
But in Bee’s entire rant, she never mentions the Democrats have their own pet causes and special interests and organizations they support as well that can be just as polarizing as guns. (Planned Parenthood anyone?)
After that, Bee moved to “the history of racism,” well, specifically the history of Republican racism, at least. She tried to make the case that fiscal conservatives have paired themselves with white supremacists for several decades now which led way to today’s Republican party and the rise of Donald Trump as the nominee.
BEE: Now, I am not saying all racists are Republican or that all Republicans are racists. They are absolutely not. I am saying that for half a century, the G.O.P., in order to win elections, has relied on an uneasy coalition of two opposing interests.Think of the modern G.O.P. As a bunch of smart entrepreneurs and small businessmen who entered into an ill advised partnership with white supremacists for the purposes of expanding their business [video clip of “Breaking Bad” playing in background]
Trump isn't desecrating the Republican party. He's just peeling back the glossy exterior to reveal the hideous symbiont that's been lurking there for decades. So, G.O.P., the time has come to decide, do you still want that beast living in your house or not? Because until you choose once and for all to toss it out and fumigate, you will never get the fun people to come over.
