‘View’ Host Hostin Peeved by Focus on Cuomo Scandal; ‘What Kind of Political Play’ Is GOP Up To?

On Thursday’s The View, co-host Sunny Hostin was increasingly irritated by the continued focus on New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and his mounting scandals. So much so, that she even argued this was a political move by Republicans to save Donald Trump and his family from going to jail.

The hosts were discussing whether the Democrat governor’s highly criticized apology for his behavior was sufficient enough. Instead of condemning Cuomo, Hostin resurrected her claims of GOP hypocrisy from Tuesday's show

Now that Governor Cuomo has apologized, something that we have never heard from, you know, the disgraced, former, twice impeached, one-term president. We also haven't heard any statements from a lot of other Republicans that have been accused of similar, if not, worse behavior. I would like to say I would like to see some of that energy in terms of calling for investigations for the Jim Jordans, for the Matthew -- sorry. For the Madison Cawthorns. For the former president. I would like to see that same energy if we're going to be talking about accountability over and over and over again.

She then downplayed the sex scandal by arguing it was a “political play” by Republicans, even going so far as to float the conspiracy that this was all to benefit Donald Trump:

I find it -- it seems to me when it comes to Governor Cuomo, politics are certainly taking a bit of a part in it, not withstanding the nursing home scandal because I do think that that is something that he needs to explain, and we need to certainly investigate that, but when it comes to these claims about sexual harassment, I mean, you now have a lot of Republican congresspeople coming forward and saying, I am going to challenge the governor in 2022, and let's remember that, you know, the former president is certainly looking at several investigations as is his -- as are his children into their untoward behavior, and the governors of most U.S. states have the power to grant pardons or reprieves for offenses under state criminal law. I'm sure Republicans would love to have a Republican governor here in New York so he won't be held accountable or his children for all of their behavior. So we need to also think about what kind of political play is going on here.

Which, you probably will be unsurprised to find was her opposite take in 2018 when Democrats brought forth accusations against Supreme Court Justice nominee, Brett Kavanaugh. On Good Morning America’s September 28, 2018 show, the ABC legal analyst was irate at the idea that Kavanaugh’s hearing was political. She fumed:

“[S]exual assault should never be a partisan issue. That is an issue of right and wrong and I think what's terrible people are saying her testimony while credible isn't corroborated. The reason it's not corroborated is because the record is incomplete here!” Hostin gushed.

On today's show, Whoopi Goldberg also pitied former Democrat congresswoman Katie Hill resigning in disgrace over own sex scandals.

"So I wish on both sides y'all would make up your mind of how this is going to work. Are we going to say, when these things happen, we're going to let the ethics committee decide or are we just going to, you know, pitch fork everybody?" she complained.

WHOOPI GOLDBERG: Sunny, what's your thoughts on all this?

SUNNY HOSTIN: Well, you know, what is striking to me is the hypocrisy coming from the right because, you know, now that Governor Cuomo has apologized, something that we have never heard from, you know, the disgraced former twice impeached one-term president, we also haven't heard any statements from a lot of other Republicans that have been accused of similar, if not, worse behavior. I would like to say I would like to see some of that energy in terms of calling for investigations for the Jim Jordans, for the Matthew -- sorry. For the Madison Cawthorns. For the former president. I would like to see that same energy if we're going to be talking about accountability over and over and over again. Now of course, these other Republicans have denied everything, denial, denial, denial, denial, but there has been no investigation, no formal investigation, and Republicans aren't even calling for that kind of investigation. So if we want to talk about an accountability culture, then let's talk about that culture across the board, and I find it -- it seems to me when it comes to Governor Cuomo, politics are certainly taking a bit of a part in it, not withstanding the nursing home scandal because I do think that that is something that he needs to explain, and we need to certainly investigate that, but when it comes to these claims about sexual harassment, I mean, you now have a lot of Republican congresspeople coming forward and saying, I am going to challenge the governor in 2022, and let's remember that, you know, the former president is certainly looking at several investigations as is his -- as are his children into their untoward behavior, and the governors of most U.S. states have the power to grant pardons or reprieves for offenses under state criminal law. So we need to also think about what kind of political play is going on here.
