CNN Whacks Debate Crowd, Hypes Chelsea Clinton's Future Political Career

September 23rd, 2011 11:59 AM

Liberals watching CNN Friday morning would have been pleased by the "Political Buzz" segment that targeted Republicans for criticism and hyped the possible political career of Chelsea Clinton.

CNN reported that the "crowd" at Thursday's GOP debate booed a gay soldier serving in Iraq. From the video they provided of the incident, it was clear that a couple of rogue crowd members booed the man, and not the audience in general.

The next question touted the performance of Chelsea Clinton at her father's Global Initiative, as anchor Kyra Phillips said that the former President's daughter "took New York by storm, we are told."

After tape played of audience laughter at some of Clinton's remarks, Phillips asked this gem: "So what do you guys think, could we possibly see a Chelsea Clinton running for office, maybe?"

A transcript of the segment, which aired on September 23 at 10:43 a.m. EDT, is as follows:

KYRA PHILLIPS: Let's go ahead and start, guys. With a lot of talk about this event – or I guess you could say what happened when an openly-gay soldier spoke at the debate last night. You know what I'm talking about. Take a listen.

(Video Clip)

STEVEN HILL, serving in Iraq: In 2010 when I was deployed to Iraq, I had to lie about who I was because I am a gay soldier, and I didn't want to lose my job. My question is, under one of your presidencies do you intend to circumvent the progress that has been made for gay and lesbian soldiers in the military?

AUDIENCE MEMBERS: Boo!

(End Video Clip)

PHILLIPS: Alright, politics aside, you heard the boos. What do you think, guys, is it ever appropriate to boo a solider in the war zone? Dana?

DANA LOESCH, CNN correspondent: No, it's never appropriate. And if you look at Twitter, especially with all of the people in the audience who were taking pictures and updating – it was a couple of individuals, it wasn't a crowd of people. And the people who were telling them to shut up and booing at them and hissing at them because they had the audacity to boo a soldier in war zone, those were the people that ended up being the loudest, because they were drowning out these two clowns that got up and decided to show the world their IQ by booing a soldier in a war zone.

PHILLIPS: My guess is we might hear a little more about this, ladies and gentlemen. Your buzzer beater now, 20 seconds each on this one, we'll get right to it. Chelsea Clinton actually took New York by storm, we are told, at her father's Global Initiative. Here's a little peek at what happened.

(Video Clip)

CHELSEA CLINTON: As your daughter, I remember when I helped you send your first text message.

HILLARY CLINTON, Secretary of State: Yes.

AUDIENCE: (Laughter)

CLINTON: That wasn't very long ago, I have to tell you. I mean, Chelesa is being much too kind and gentle, because both Bill and I – if you don't tell anybody, I'll tell you. We are primitive –

CHELSEA CLINTON: My father still refers to the internet as the "world wide web."

(Laughter)

PHILLIPS: So what do you guys think, could we possibly see a Chelsea Clinton running for office, maybe?
