The Little Sisters of the Poor sued over ObamaCare's birth control mandate on Tuesday, claiming the law forces them to violate their consciences. However, CNN ignored these nuns after boosting the liberal "Nuns on the Bus" tour last year that slammed the Ryan budget.
"We cannot violate our vows by participating in the government's program to provide access to abortion inducing drugs," said Sister Loraine Marie, the superior of one of the congregation's provinces. The Becket Fund, which filed the lawsuit, said the congregation will not be exempt from the mandate and faces millions of dollars in fines.
"Without relief, the Little Sisters face millions of dollars in IRS fines because they cannot comply with the government's mandate that they give their employees free access to contraception, sterilization, and abortion-inducing drugs," the Becket Fund stated.
CNN has lent a deaf ear to the plight of these sisters, with not a single mention of the lawsuit. It was not so when dissenting nuns were reprimanded by the Vatican last year, and CNN asked if the church was being "dictatorial" with the U.S. nuns.
And CNN helped publicize – and cheered for – the "Nuns on the Bus" tour that protested the Ryan budget last year. "You go, girls," said anchor Carol Costello.
CNN used that tour to highlight Catholics opposing the GOP presidential ticket. "[Paul] Ryan is now getting some major pushback from Catholics who oppose him in one area – his budget policies," correspondent Lisa Sylvester said on August 21, 2012 on CNN Newsroom.
"The 'Nuns on the Bus,' they traveled 2,700 miles this summer. Railing against Congressman Paul Ryan's budget proposal that they say would slash social programs and hurt the poor," Sylvester reported.
However, nuns following the church's teaching by refusing to comply with ObamaCare's birth control mandate have been ignored by the network.
