Actress Sarah Jessica Parker, famous for her role as a helpless know-it-all writer, has decided to throw her support behind President Obama in a new ad aimed at attracting donors to his reelection campaign.
In the ad, which debuted during MTV’s annual Movie Awards, Parker clearly patronizes to her intended audience by referring to Obama as “that guy” as she invites them to eat dinner with herself, the president and First Lady Michelle Obama.
As might be expected, however, Parker’s message isn’t a carte blanche invitation to dine with her but rather a pitch for a contest that Obama fans can enter by donating a minimum of $3 to the campaign.
"The guy who ended the war in Iraq, the guy who says you should be able to marry anyone you want and the guy who created 4 million new jobs -- that guy -- President Obama and Michelle are coming to my house for dinner on June 14,” Parker excitedly informs the audience before launching into the sales pitch.
“I want you to be there, too,” she says before inviting viewers to visit a campaign website where they can enter the dinner lottery.
The spot, which is Obama's first national television ad, ran three times during the award show and is in keeping with an ongoing campaign strategy to use celebrities such as George Clooney as a way to entice small-dollar donors into giving away their cash to the Obama campaign.
An event hosted by Clooney last month is reported to have raised around $15 million, with about half of the donations coming in smaller amounts.
The president’s reelection team has raffled away dinners before with just Obama or his wife as well. The Hollywood angle appears to be a new one and likely is more lucrative since the president has been less able to use a “coolness” campaign with three years of a bad economy under his leadership.
