All too often, top U.S. Spanish-language television anchors and reporters are prone to injecting their own liberal opinions into their reporting. A prime example took place in recent days during the Mexican presidential campaign, when Univision correspondent Jaime García reported on how the election of Andrés Manuel López Obrador as Mexico’s new President may change relations between that country and the United States.
In his report, García characterized Donald Trump’s signature campaign pledge and subsequent policies as President to stem the flow of illegal immigration across the U.S. southern border as using Mexicans as ‘scapegoats’ to “justify his anti-immigrant policies.”

MAURICIO MESCHOULAM, POLITICAL ANALYST, UNIVISION: Mexico heavily relies on having a good relationship with the United States, so I do not think that Andrés Manuel will try to break that relationship.
GARCIA: Detractors of López Obrador label him as a man of strong character and patriotic spirit, so they foresee a clash with President Trump, who from the beginning of his campaign used Mexicans as scapegoats to justify his anti-immigrant policies.
García repeats the same canard that has been used countless times on Univision and Telemundo since Donald Trump first announced his campaign for the presidency three years ago.
Trump’s unpolitically correct willingness to identify the nationality of tens of thousands of criminals who are unlawfully present in the United States, along with his determination to enforce the country’s immigration laws through his administration’s “zero tolerance” policy, continues to be described by anchors and reporters like García as ‘scapegoating’ and ‘anti-immigrant.’
Thankfully, many Latinos in the United States discount and see through such dishonest reporting.
