Sharpton Falsely Claims Louisiana Sex Offender Was 'Legal' Gun Owner

In an attempt to slam the NRA for not being true to their values, MSNBC host and riot inciter Al Sharpton claimed the civil rights organization was not defending the gun owners in the recent police shootings. “In both cases you have people with guns, that were killed by police, legally. One in a carry state of Louisiana, the other had a gun permit. And the NRA -- laryngitis advocating on their behalf,” he falsely claimed during PoliticsNation on Sunday.

In what started as a segment to bash Donald Trump, for not jumping through all the social justice hoops following the tragedies, soon turned to the National Rifle Association. “He did go further than NRA who only referred to it in a Facebook post on Friday afternoon as “a situation” in Minnesota,” stated pundit Edmond Siegfried.

Siegfried’s claim was also false. The NRA never referred to any of the week’s tragedies as simply “a situation,” neither on Facebook nor Twitter. It is standard procedure for the NRA not to comment on open investigations, but did want the Minnesota shooting fully investigated.

Sharpton played off of Siegfried and falsely claimed that Alton Sterling was legally carrying his firearm when he was killed by police. According to the extraordinarily liberal New York Daily News:

Sterling was a registered sex offender, after a 2000 conviction for carnal knowledge of a juvenile, records show…

He was previously arrested for aggravated battery, criminal damage to property, unauthorized entry and domestic abuse battery, records show. In 2009, he was sentenced to five years in prison for marijuana possession and for carrying an illegal weapon with a controlled dangerous substance.

These convictions barred him from ever legally owning a firearm. In sharp contrast Philando Castile, the victim in the Minnesota shooting, had a clean record and was legally allowed to carry a concealed firearm.

AL SPARPTON: Why do you think he [Donald Trump] didn't reach out to the African-American community? Why do you think he didn't detail what he's going to do about these kinds of issues?

EDMOND SIEGFRIED: Because he doesn't know himself what he'll do. Let's just be honest. Donald Trump is in over his head when it comes to issues of any policy. So he could have gone out and talked about how police body cameras would help that, and they would reduce wrongful shootings, how these shootings were tragic. He did go further than NRA who only referred to it in a Facebook post on Friday afternoon as “a situation” in Minnesota.

SHARPTON: Who by the way, in both cases you have people with guns, that were killed by police, legally. One in a carry state of Louisiana, the other had a gun permit. And the NRA laryngitis advocating on their behalf.

SIEGFRIED: That's going to come back to bite them.

JOAN WALSH: I agree!

SHARPTON: Oh, yeah!

SIEGFRIED: Conservatives right now are very upset because they say, “okay, the NRA has made a, made their point to be standing up for gun owners and you have two gun owners not getting any voice for them.” That’s absolutely atrocious, on the NRA’s part!

WALSH: And there’s some push back among members to their silence.

SHARPTON: Internally. There is a New York Times this morning— A story this morning talking about how they’re there— I read on several sites where some NRA members

WALSH: are angry.

SHARPTON: are fighting back which is why I raised my bite.
