Waaaaah! Dana Milbank is really really angry at Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and if he doesn't do just want Dana wants him to do then he will be shunned by liberals forever and ever.
Milbank went into full petulant fury mode on this topic in his May 12 Washington Post column in which he angrily declared how betrayed he feels over the fact that Rosenstein did not follow the approved liberal narrative on the James Comey firing. Not only did Rosenstein commit the heresy of issuing a memo listing the reasons for firing Comey which all liberals wanted to happen right up to the moment he actually was fired by President Trump, he dared to contradict incorrect mainstream media reports that he threated to quit his job.
Milbank kicked off his extended whine by threatening that Rod Rosenstein has one chance to save himself.
Rod Rosenstein: Save yourself.
For years, the man who just became the No. 2 official in the Justice Department painstakingly built a reputation as a gifted prosecutor and an above-the-fray lawman, serving Democratic and Republican administrations alike.
Now, just over two weeks into his new job, he has become a national joke.
This from the guy who became a national joke when he was forced to eat his own column last year.
He has destroyed his credibility by giving cover and legitimacy to Trump’s decision to fire FBI Director James B. Comey, the man overseeing the agency’s probe of the Trump campaign’s possible collusion with Russia in tilting the 2016 election Trump’s way.
His high crime was that, despite giving the same reasons for dissatisfaction with the performance of former FBI Director that Democrats had loudly stated, President Trump followed through by firing James Comey. Oh, and newsflash to Milbank: the FBI investigation into supposed Trump-Russia collusion will still continue despite the fact that it is laughably non-existent.
The Post reported that Rosenstein threatened to resign because the White House was turning him into a stooge. Others matched the Post report. But Rosenstein says: No, he made no such threat.
And for telling the truth and contradicting the Washington Post and other fake news MSM outlets, Rosenstein must be punished. Milbank continues with his white foam tirade against Rosenstein:
Rosenstein is either the most naive man in town, or he’s not the honest man we all thought him to be. Let’s give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he’s an ingenue who was chewed up and spit out by the Trump White House, which commandeered his unsullied reputation to justify its Comey sacking and left his once-vaunted standing in tatters.
In that case, Rosenstein needs to wake up to the reality that he has been — and continues to be — used by Trump and his defenders to provide a veneer of legitimacy to his decision to eliminate the head of the Russia probe.
Yeah, a sacking that many Democrats were demanding right up until the exact moment that Trump sacked Comey. At that instant it became an unpardonable sin.
Finally, Milbank gives Rosenstein just one last chance to rehabilitate his reputation but not his honor which he claims is now probably beyond the possibility of recovery.
Rosenstein now makes Comey look like Solomon. If he cares at all about rehabilitating the reputation he built, Rosenstein has one option: He can appoint a serious, independent and above-reproach special counsel — the sort of person Rosenstein was seen as, until this week — to continue the Russia probe.
Rosenstein may never recover his honor. But this is his only chance.
Milbank sounded the same clarion call on May 9 about how Rosenstein "has one chance to rehabilitate his reputation" by doing the special counsel appointment shtick when he hopefully declared that Comey’s dismissal may turn the anti-Trump wave into a tsunami. Unfortunately for Milbank it now appears that outside the liberal bubble the desperately desired tsunami is quickly fading into a mild ripple.
