Nazis! Lincoln Project carnival barker Steve Schmidt has a rather worn comparison that he pulls out on a frequent basis to make himself appear supposedly edgy. This already stale analogy he continues to use and reuse is comparing Trump supporters to fascists.
The latest incarnation of Schmidt's already worn retread came on Monday on MSNBC's Deadline: White House. Since thousands of Trump supporters staged a rally in the nation's capital on Saturday, the frequent MSNBC guest just couldn't resist pulling out his old act yet again.
But we should all be terrified of what we saw this weekend in Washington, D.C. And we should think about it. What is it that we saw this weekend in Washington? What was it? They weren’t wearing brown and black uniforms like they would have in Italy or in Germany in the 1920s or 1930s, but they’re the same people. What we saw was right-wing violence in the nation's capital. This is political violence. This is a fascistic organization.
When you have more than a majority of the Republicans in the House through their signing of that amicus brief, making a political declaration — and let’s be clear about this, it’s not a legal declaration, it’s a junk lawsuit, it’s like something out of a Seinfeld episode. It's a political declaration, and it’s a declaration of repudiation against our independence, against a fundamental and most notional ideas and ideals of the country. And that political declaration is one that you can’t walk back from. They’ve crossed the Rubicon, so to speak.
If this sounds incredibly familiar it might be because you could have heard almost the exact same thing coming out of Schmidt's mouth before such as on November 6 when he repeated what he said both before and what he would recite yet again on Monday.
Look, we have almost 48 percent of this country that's voted for a statist authoritarian movement with fascistic markers that's hostile to American democracy, to the rule of law that venerates an individual, that's a cult of personality.
...You know, we have an emboldened white supremacist, white nationalist movement in this country now because of Trump. We see a militia movement that has become part and parcel of the Republican Party where it's now standard operating procedure at a --- at a political rally to see the guys with their AR-15s. So all of this needs to be sealed back under a sarcophagus of the type that lays over the Chernobyl reactor. But it's going to take a long, long time to do it.
Schmidt's group, The Lincoln Project, has been trashed as a con job grifter organization. Here's the New York Post:
For most of the last year, the Lincoln Project has just been a scam — veteran GOP consultants raising $78 million for the anti-Trump cause while sending nearly all the cash to firms run by its board members.
