Liberal comedian Chelsea Handler is known for slamming people who disagree with her politics, but she went over the top on Sunday, August 6, when she suggested that it would be “nice 2 have laws here for people who think racism is funny.”
The host of the Chelsea program on the Netflix pay cable television channel made the remark after she learned that “2 Chinese guys were arrested in Berlin for making nazi salutes.”
That tweet was quickly shot down by Jon Levine, senior editor for the Mediaite.com website, who noted that the statement was “a serious misstep” because such legislation “would target sharp-elbowed comedians like herself.”
Chiming in on the irony of the post was Christina Hoff Sommers, a resident scholar at the conservative American Enterprise Institute who asked Handler: “Please re-consider. Would you want to see [longtime comedian] Mel Brooks arrested?”
It was all downhill from there as many posters on the Twitter website came out with both fists flying.
One of the first tweets on the situation came from video analyst Mark Dice, who disagreed with the concept of outlawing “funny racism” and instead stated: “It’s nice we have the First Amendment.”
Amy Alkon agreed with Dice, asserting that Handler is “calling for the arrest of countless comedians who make jokes on race” while noting the First Amendment “is vitally important in preserving freedom, democracy.”
“Yeah,” Ben McDonald noted, “racist jokes are just terrible.” He then turned Handler’s concept back on itself because “Chelsea must want herself arrested for finding racist jokes funny.”
Neontaster joined the discourse by asking: “So when are you turning yourself in?”
“So racist jokes are only funny when you make them?” Tyler Smith tweeted before adding: “Everyone else should be arrested?”
Jack Jones also took the concept in a different direction: “We should ban people who think you are funny.”
Dean Jalili asserted that Handler’s concept “sounds great in theory but that's a slippery slope. Sad that you don't understand that.”
“No, it doesn’t sound great in theory,” Kurt Schlichter responded.
“Hey, Chelsea,” @eddiecarl4468 posted. “Remember when you made fun of @FLOTUS [Melania Trump, the First Lady of the United States] because of her accent and heritage? Should you be arrested?”
Another Twitter poster inserted an earlier tweet by Handler: “I can’t be racist -- my dog is an Asian/Jewish crossbreed.”
Faith Gates, an intern with the Mediaite.com website, summarized the response by stating:
While none of the Twitter reactions said that racism is okay, almost everyone agreed that this isn’t a solution.
Good thing Handler is just a comedian tweeting instead of actually in charge of policy changes.
As NewsBusters has previously reported, this is definitely not the first time Handler has mixed her far-left views with attempts at comedy.
One week before the presidential election on Tuesday, November 9, 2016, Handler predicted a “celebrity exodus” to Canada if Republican Donald Trump won the White House over Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.
On Election Day, Handler recorded two versions of her program for that night, one that was a celebration of Clinton’s victory with people cheering, balloons falling and a woman holding a sign that read “Roe v. Wade 4 Ever,” and another version “if the unthinkable happens” and instead featured conservative activist Ann Coulter.
California Senator Barbara Boxer was called upon to counsel Handler on the show taped the day after the election. Both women were in tears that Clinton lost to Trump.
Handler opened with a self-serving throwaway line -- she’d suck it up and do the show to honor Clinton although she was depressed and confused over the election results.
Then on Thursday, December 1, the liberal comedian used her time as a guest on The Daily Show for the Comedy Central cable television channel to slam women who refused to vote for Clinton as she declared that "there's something wrong with you."
Two weeks later, Handler -- who described herself as an advocate for “women supporting women” -- criticized the “great culprits behind Donald Trump’s victory” (white women, of course).
In her essay, Handler attacked those who take their rights for granted and bow to their male overlords. “Specifically,” she noted, “the 53 percent of all white female voters who chose Mr. Trump.”
She claimed that “94 percent of black women voted for Clinton because, unlike white women, black women don’t take their rights, liberties or justice for granted.”
Of course, Handler has attacked President Trump nonstop since then, recently claiming that he has syphilis and referring to him as “our brainless monkey in the White House.”
As long as the liberal comedian continues her hostile behavior, it's certain she will again and again find herself a target for posters at Twitter ... and other websites as well.
