Despite the fact that no Democrat has won statewide in Texas since 1994, Time magazine on Tuesday devoted over 1600 words to the “handsome” Beto O’Rourke, the liberal hope for Democrats in Texas. O’Rourke is challenging the “dogmatic conservative,” incumbent Senator Ted Cruz.
Time writer Nash Jenkins gushed over the candidate: “The Congressman is lanky, handsome and charismatic. Elderly voters some-times tell him that he reminds them of John F. Kennedy.” Jenkins cheered “the former punk-rock bassist who has spent three terms in the U.S. House” (Perhaps O’Rourke can perform with Joe Scarborough’s band?)
Jenkins left it to others to describe the candidate as liberal:
Cruz attacks O’Rourke as a liberal Democrat, citing his support for the Iran nuclear deal and sanctuary cities. “Congressman O’Rourke’s values may bode well in California,” says Catherine Frazier, a Cruz spokeswoman, “but they are the opposite of what Texans want in their leaders.”
Nowhere does Jenkins mention that O’Rourke has an F-grade from the NRA. But the journalist seems to have a thing for the liberal. On May 8, he wrote another story touting the “promising fresh face” and marveled, “Something is happening here in south Texas.”
O’Rourke’s excitment and hope for O’Rourke can be seen in this May 22 tweet he pinned at the top of his profile:
Americans can expect more fawning profiles of Beto O’Rourke between now and November. It should be pointed out that Wendy Davis, the last liberal hope in the state, lost her gubernatorial race in 2014 by 20 points.
