Donald Trump fought back on Tuesday by filing a $500 million lawsuit against Univision. The Spanish-language network replied the suit was “both factually false and legally ridiculous.”
What’s been missed in all this hubbub is that large chunks of the national media have completely ignored Univision executive Alberto Ciurana’s post on Instagram comparing Trump to Dylann Roof, the mass murderer in the Charleston church shooting.
ABC, CBS, PBS, and NPR have all avoided the topic. Ironically, it’s Trump-dumping NBC who had one mention of the Ciurana posting – two sentences from NBC reporter Katy Tur on Friday’s Today.
KATY TUR: On Thursday, the network dropped the Miss USA pageant which had planned to air in Spanish-speaking countries around the world. It follows a reported Instagram post last week by a Univision executive of Trump alongside one of Charleston shooter Dylann Roof with the caption "No Comments." That post has since been removed. Now Miss USA co-host Roselyn Sanchez and Cristian de la Fuente are bowing out.
Even the Associated Press skipped the story. Among newspapers, USA Today, the Los Angeles Times, and The New York Times all avoided the story. The Washington Post only carried an online mention from media blogger Erik Wemple.
Instead, New York Times columnist (and former “objective reporter”) Timothy Egan called Trump a firebomber:
Guilt by association can be unfair, or at least calls out for nuance. So let's move on to a more overt racial firebomber in the party, Trump, who is polling second -- just behind Jeb Bush -- in one recent survey of New Hampshire Republicans.
