PBS’s coverage of Tuesday night’s Trump-Harris debate included live fact-checking from its partner PolitiFact, which has racked up a liberally slanted record. In 2020, PolitiFact gave Georgia Sen. David Perdue a “pants on fire” rating for claiming that rival Jon Ossoff was a socialist. Now, PolitiFact is at it again, giving Donald Trump a similar “pants on fire” on Wednesday for rating for labeling Kamala Harris a communist.

PolitiFact took after Sen. J.D. Vance on Tuesday, with a subhead claiming he "misrepresents Minnesota law on kids seeking "gender-affirming care." The fact-defying term appears 18 times in the PolitiFact copy. They ruled Vance was "False," but not as false as claiming amputations and hormone thearpies are "gender-affirming."

PBS and their "independent fact-checker" partners at PolitiFact can agree: the Democratic convention was much more factual than the Republican convention. So Democrats didn't just corner the market on "joy" and "electricity," but apparently on facticity. 

With both party conventions now in the books, so too are PolitiFact’s nightly recaps. After four days of the RNC and the DNC, PBS’s new fact-checking partner, gave Republicans three times as many false ratings while giving Democrats three times as many true ratings.

Following days of controversy, PolitiFact officially gave GOP vice presidential nominee JD Vance a “mostly false” rating on Friday for claiming his Democratic counterpart, Tim Walz, abandoned his National Guard unit prior to its deployment to Iraq. However, PolitiFact omitted some key details from those who served with Walz that could’ve changed the truth-o-meter.

PolitiFact, one of the fact-checking outlets with the ability to censor your Facebook posts, and PBS, the news channel subsidized by your tax dollars, announced in a joint statement on Friday on their respective websites that they are teaming up for the remainder of the 2024 election cycle, formalizing their June 27 Debate segment.

Republicans and many independents do not believe in the term “independent fact-checkers” when it comes to federal elections. Fact-checkers predictably defend Democrats from GOP “misinformation” in election season. Democrat extremism on abortion is one topic where the fact “checkers” are the fact manglers. After Thursday’s debate between Presidents Donald Trump and Joe Biden, the fact-checkers at PolitiFact and USA Today gave their recaps of both men’s most controversial claims. On the statements the two Facebook partners examined, Trump was rated false 100 percent of the time, while Biden was rated false only 44 percent of the time.

There are three things certain in life: death, taxes, and self-styled fact-checkers defending Democrats on late-term abortion. The latest example came on Friday from D.L. Davis who gave Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson a “false” label for claiming “Every Senate Democrat has voted to support unlimited abortions up to the moment of birth.”
