Once again, celebrities have jumped on the liberal outrage express, hoping that their on-location protest will finally be the spark that ignites the anti-Trump revolution.
On Sunday morning, a group of Hollywood actresses (and an actor) arrived at the child detention facilities near El Paso, Texas to hold up signs against U.S. immigration law. The Hollywood social justice caravan boasted several famous faces, including Lena Dunham, Amber Heard, Sia, Connie Britton, Bella Thorne, Mira Sorvino, Constance Vu, and Joshua Jackson.
Buzzfeed News reported that the “group of Hollywood stars traveled to the southern border on Sunday morning to protest the Trump administration’s immigration policies outside the Tornillo detention center in Texas.” That’s because they “felt compelled to go to the border after seeing reports of detained children and separated families.”
The celebrity activists took an early flight from L.A. to El Paso, and were bused in to join a group of several hundred protestors at the #EndFamilyDetention protest. The demonstration was originally named “Stop Separation” – until the recent order came from President Trump to keep children detained with their families.
But that didn’t stop them.
The throng of demonstrators lined the road outside the Tornillo detention center, dressed in white. Several speakers addressed the crowd, including Mexican civil rights activist Dolores Huerta, former U.S. secretary of housing and urban development Julian Castro, Kerry Kennedy, and actor Rob Reiner, who made sure to remind everyone that “we have a racist in the White House.”
“Make no mistake about it; he’d rather keep brown people from their kids,” Reiner said of Trump.
Friday Night Lights and American Horror Story actress Connie Britton told Buzzfeed News that she decided to join the event upon being “horrified” by recent news events. “I kind of reached a moment this week where I was like, ‘I need to go see for myself’” she added.
Lena Dunham, the organizer behind the celebrity trip, also gave a statement. Holding up a sign that read #KeepFamiliesTogether, the Girls actress said, “I’m here ‘cause this is a humanitarian crisis and it’s deeply important that we as Americans stand up and say, ‘This is not who we are, this is not what we believe in, we do not believe in the separation or detention of families.’”
Joshua Jackson, of Dawson’s Creek fame, knocked Laura Ingraham’s comment about border detention camps being like summer camp, saying, “I think that would be the shittiest summer camp of all time.”
Bella Thorne also chimed in, saying “So fucked up. The whole American dream idea is kind of a lie.”
Yes, because, clearly, the only way to mourn the death of the American dream would be to overturn the vital laws that protect it.
