At a Clinton fundraiser she hosted last Thursday, singer Cher announced her intention to “leave the planet” if Trump emerged the victor on November 8. Sabo, a conservative street artist based in LA, decided to have some fun with her sensationalist comment.
On election Sunday, a number of billboards could be found gracing benches in Pacific Palisades, Brentwood and Beverly Hills. The landscape style advertisements, designed to imitate those of Sotheby’s Real Estate Company, announced the sale of a particular outspoken celebrity’s home. Trump was pictured as the Sotheby’s agent.
Cher was one of the lucky six included in the project. The caption to her particular billboard read: “Moving to Jupiter Election Day Sale. For sales information contact Sotheby’s agent Donald Trump.” Other celebs who have all declared their intentions to move, including Amy Schumer, Jon Stewart, Lena Dunham, Bryan Cranston and Samuel L. Jackson, were also caricatured.
Hollywood—from celebrities to CEOs—is a mecca for progressive beliefs. Some of Clinton’s largest “hillblazers” include Dreamworks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg and Producer/Screenwriter Steven Spielberg, who together donated $4.7 million to Democratic candidates, campaigns and causes in the current election season. But financial influence aside, celebs have made their opinions especially loud and clear this election season. It is almost difficult to identify a celebrity who has not made a political statement, tweeted an endorsement or recorded a get-out-and-vote video.
From Katy Perry to Jennifer Lopez, Hillary Clinton has wielded the power of celebrity influencers to sway millennials and minorities, among other cohorts integral to her ascent. Meanwhile, Trump has avoided such star power. On Friday night, the Republican candidate declared to a Hershey, PA crowd: "I didn't have to bring J-Lo or Jay Z. I am here all by myself. Just me. No guitar, no piano, no nothing."
Sabo’s disgust with celebrity involvement in the election was one reason for his embarkation on his artistic venture. "I swear to God, you give these people a platform and they bash you over the head with it every time," he told The Hollywood Reporter. “I created these mock Sotheby's bench advertisements to help them along their way, letting people know their homes are on the market."
"Half of Hollywood is moving to Canada if Trump is elected, the artist continued. “By the way, why the hell aren't these people moving to Mexico?” Good question.
The ads are all displayed online at www.gtfooh.today, a website which stands for “Get the F—k Out of Here Today.” If Trump does prevail, it sounds like more than one would welcome the Hollywood exodus.
