The Twitter mob is bowing down in praise for Jill Biden. Why? Because she wore a scrunchie to pick up Valentines … and no, this isn’t a joke.
Over the weekend, First Lady Jill Biden was spotted buying Valentine’s Day treats at local DC bakery “The Sweet Lobby.” The people of Twitter fawned over how "relatable" the FLOTUS looked in her high pony and scrunchy while shopping. She made fans feel “so seen” and was “A relatable FLOTUS!” according to Glamour. Twitter was flooded with support for her look.
Dr. Sapna Kudchadkar of Johns Hopkins Medicine tweeted her approval of the outfit and said, “Just another badass woman rocking a scrunchie and visiting a local business.” And New York Times reporter Claire Cain Miller loved the “scrunchie energy” that Jill gave off.
Users apparently just “Can’t love this lady enough.” I wonder if they really love Jill as much as they say or if they just have a perpetual hate for Melania. One person even tweeted that this is the “normal I need from my FLOTUS” implying that the experience with FLOTUS 45 was not normal.
Jacqueline Alemany of The Washington Post wrote up on how much more the Bidens are relatable than the Trumps. The headline: “Scrunchies and dog walking: the country gets a taste of Jill Biden's radical normalcy.” Alemany interviewed multiple people for the Power Up newsletter piece and included that while Melania Trump was “choreographed and manicured,” Jill Biden was “laissez-faire.” Alemany interviewed “resident FLOTUS expert” Mary Jordan who said that “Melania Trump was the most put together person and Jill comes across as a relatable mom, teacher, wife and woman — she's relatable in a way that Melania never was.” The article also made jabs at Melania for not being outwardly affectionate towards her husband enough when Jill and Joe have no problem with PDA. Seriously?
She’s the First Lady of the United States. She is probably the least relatable person unless you’ve been a First Lady yourself. Her and Joe’s net worth is like $9 million. #relatable.
It’s ironic that the media is covering Jill as being such a relatable woman when she’s admitted herself that she is not. Back in 2009, the LA Times wrote what Jill once said, “I was so sick of the mail coming to Sen. and Mrs. Biden. I wanted to get mail addressed to Dr. and Sen. Biden.” Getting her doctorate in education was a choice she made so her reputation and clout would be closer to her husband's. Now, Twitter even has the #DrFLOTUS trending. It’s just weird to see her as “relatable” when she is clearly distinguishing herself in just her title alone. A scrunchie with a high ponytail doesn’t hide that.
Does a normal/relatable person casually spend over $100 on cupcakes and macaroons? Does a normal person have a Secret Service squad accompany them to a bakery? Does a relatable person have a quality camera man follow them around to take pictures of them picking up pastries? It seems in this attempt to relate to Jill, sorry, Dr. Jill Biden, that she is in fact not relatable at all.
This is really just another PR stunt. I guess I just didn’t realize how much fuss a hair accessory merits when there are actual life-threatening issues in the world.
