A Twitter account that tracks what it calls “The best of what’s happening on Twitter in an instant” shows just how biased the social media site really is. The account's leftist cultural and political news content outnumbers conservative content six-to-one.
MRC Free Speech America examined 200 tweets posted by @TwitterMoments during the months of May, June and July. The tweet topics focused on leftist takes on race, gender, LGBT issues and politics.
@TwitterMoments, for example, tweeted a Bloomberg Quicktake video depicting protests against the communist government in Cuba. Both Twitter Moments and Bloomberg Quicktake peddled the White House narrative that the Cuban freedom-fighters were protesting the Cuban “government's response to the global pandemic and resulting economic crisis.”
Unfortunately for Twitter, Jorge Luis Gil, a priest at the protests, explained in the video that, "People come out to freely express themselves and they (the Cuban government) are repressing them,” according to Bloomberg Quicktake.
The account treated 19 LGBT stories (out of 137) and reported on 27 with a hyper-focus on race. For example, the account gave a shout-out to critical race theorist and New York Times journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones, when the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill rejected her candidacy for tenure. In the same tweet, Twitter Moments reminded readers that Hannah-Jones won a Pulitzer Prize for the 1619 Project — the race-baiting education project she developed.
@TwitterMoments also completely omitted any reference to White House Health advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci and his publicly released emails sent during the pandemic. Similarly, the account shared only two tweets which even touched on the surge of immigrants at America’s southern border. One tweet mentioned Vice President Kamala Harris’s very belated trip to El Paso, TX, and the other discussed President Joe Biden’s promise to increase the number of refugees allowed into the United States.
One tweet, which could have been ripped right from one of the many Chinese Communist Party (CCP) run accounts on Twitter, even promoted a Chinese manufactured vaccine that has come under scrutiny over its actual effectiveness, versus its purported effectiveness from the CCP.
The news stories tweeted or retweeted by @TwitterMoments were repurposed from other news outlets. The account almost exclusively relied on liberal news outlets like Reuters, Bloomberg, The Hill, ABC and CBS. By comparison, @TwitterMoments referenced only three reports, one each, from New York Post, Sky News and Wall Street Journal.
Twitter censorship reached new heights since the 2020 Presidential election. It banned former President Donald Trump from its platform, refused to archive his tweets for historical purposes and has altered its content moderation policies disproportionately affecting conservatives.
Trump announced this month that he filed lawsuits against Facebook, Google and Twitter, and their top executives Mark Zuckerberg, Sundar Pichai and Jack Dorsey. “[W]e are standing up for American democracy by standing up for free speech rights of every American, Democrat, Republican, independent, whoever it may be,” remarked Trump at a press conference announcing the lawsuits.
