For His Anti-Trump Campaign, Ramos Turns to Anti-American Journalist

April 22nd, 2016 9:35 AM

Seeking to justify his open opposition to Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump, Univision news anchor Jorge Ramos has enlisted the support of Glenn Greenwald, the leftist journalist best known for enabling Edward Snowden’s treasonous revelations of classified U.S. national security data and who is hailed by MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow as “the left’s most fearless political commentator.”

During an interview on Fusion, Univision’s sister English-language network, Greenwald obliged Ramos, saying that Trump is such a “threat and danger” that journalists should not be neutral in their coverage of him, but rather “take a position” and “sound the alarms.”

JORGE RAMOS, ANCHOR, FUSION: I’ve been debating with many journalists about neutrality. If we should be neutral all the time. Or if there are instances in which we should take a stand. What’s your take on this?”

GLENN GREENWALD, EDITOR. THEINTERCEPT.COM: Journalism in the United States was always used and thought of as a means of standing up for power and crusading against injustice. Not being neutral and simply communicating what everybody says.

JORGE RAMOS, FUSION: Exactly.

GLENN GREENWALD, THEINTERCEPT.COM: And if you look at the 2 most championed or admired TV journalists in American history, its Murrow, who in the middle of the McCarthy scandal went on TV continuously and denounced Senator McCarthy as being a fascist and endangering American democracy. And Cronkite, Walter Cronkite, who in the middle of the Vietnam War went on the air and said the government was lying and that the war was unwinnable. And so the idea that journalists can never take a position and never sound the alarms, especially when you have a threat and a danger like a Donald Trump, is a really perverted and corrupted idea of what journalism is

Ramos certainly found a soulmate in Greenwald, who former CIA and NSA Director Michael Hayden literally compared to the Devil for his “hopelessly agenda-driven” style of leftist activist journalism that was instrumental in revealing to America’s enemies the security apparatus that was built to protect the people of the United States in the post 9/11 world.

Like Greenwald, Ramos has also become known as an unapologetic activist for liberal policies –gun control and immigration among them - and in so doing has turned his news anchor role at Univision and Fusion into more and more of an anomaly.

Ramos doesn’t even attempt to hide it anymore. Not only is his coverage of the 2016 presidential campaign and top issues being debated as part of that campaign biased, but he is proud of it and celebrates the fact that he openly sides with the left. Sure, when he has his head on straight and returns to classic journalistic form he’ll throw Hillary Clinton a tough question every now and then, but it almost feels like he does so as a way to say “See, I play hardball with both sides! I’m fair and balanced in my attacks!”

You aren’t fooling anyone, Jorge.

JORGE RAMOS, HOST: I’ve been debating with many journalists about neutrality. If we should be neutral all the time. Or if there are instances in which we should take a stand. What’s your take on this?

GLENN GREENWALD, JOURNALIST: Journalism in the United States was always used and thought of as a means of standing up for power and crusading against injustice. Not being neutral and simply communicating what everybody says.

JORGE RAMOS, HOST: Exactly.

GLENN GREENWALD, JOURNALIST: And if you look at the 2 most championed or admired TV journalists in American history, its Murrow, who in the middle of the McCarthy scandal went on TV continuously and denounced Senator McCarthy as being a fascist and endangering American democracy. And Cronkite, Walter Cronkite, who in the middle of the Vietnam War went on the air and said the government was lying and that the war was unwinnable. And so the idea that journalists can never take a position and never sound the alarms, especially when you have a threat and a danger like a Donald Trump, is a really perverted and corrupted idea of what journalism is in terms of how it was always conceived and how it was always practiced by those journalists who are most admired.
