TBS’s Full Frontal and host Samantha Bee won top honors on Saturday for the Outstanding Achievement in News and Information category at Saturday’s Television Critics Association awards to the glee of the TCA after being snubbed from receiving an Emmy nomination last month in favor of the shows like The Late Late Show with James Corden and Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.
In taking home the award, the former Daily Show correspondent’s program beat out not only comedy shows like HBO shows Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and Real Time with Bill Maher but the long-running traditional news show CBS Sunday Morning as well as Ken Burns’ PBS documentary Jackie Robinson and far-lefty W. Kamau Bell’s CNN show The United Shades of America.
Deadline.com wrote about the awards and reported that she thanked critics for “letting people know that they should watch our little show” and joked that she would be “tak[ing] all of your questions on how I achieve work-life balance.”
The fact that Bee came away victorious should come as no surprise to NewsBusters readers considering how the incredibly vulgar comedian was lauded when her show launched as my colleagues and I have covered her shows week after week.
With a Metascore on metacritic.com of 84, reviewers such as The Wrap’s Diane Gordon gushed over how Bee’s show will definitely “become part of the cultural conversation and possibly fill the void felt by Jon Stewart‘s departure” due to it’s level of “scathing, insightful, [and] intelligent funny packed into Full Frontal.”
Over at The Atlantic, David Sims opined concerning one episode that “[e]very one-liner felt honed and briskly funny (describing Donald Trump as a “human caps lock”), and throughout, Bee exuded the quiet confidence that makes her a natural for this gig.”
As for Yahoo TV, Ken Tucker oozed that if the aforementioned host could “could sustain the tone she presented in this premiere episode, Full Frontal is going to be an exhilarating pleasure.”
