Need a good laugh? Well we’ve got you covered here at NewsBusters. On CNN’s Reliable Sources, host Brian Stelter had on Media Studies Professor David Zurawik who made the preposterous claim that CNN was part of the fire wall that has helped “save democracy.”
During a segment on topics ranging from Rachel Maddow’s scheduled hiatus, to Whoopi Goldberg’s suspension, Zurawik made many crazy comments but none were more loony than claiming CNN has some how "saved democracy". While discussing Goldberg, Zurawik claimed her comments in which she falsely said the Holocaust isn’t about race is a “case of misinformation rather than disinformation.”
To his credit he did say “there's no excuse for Whoopi Goldberg not to be better informed.” However he then proclaimed Goldberg’s ignorance “shows the need for a kind of Critical Race Theory discussion in schools”
While he was on the topic of misinformation and disinformation, Zurawik decided to gaslight the CNN audience and suck up to Brian Stelter by ludicrously claiming “CNN is one of the stations of all the television broadcast networks and cable channels it pushed harder from 2016 to 2020 against Trump and it was part of the fire wall that I think has saved democracy this far under Jeff Zucker.”
Stelter, who has consistently claimed CNN’s objectivity, never pushed back against Zurawik’s claim that CNN was the network that “pushed harder against Trump”. Instead Stelter agreed with Zurawik:
That is a very important piece of context for the conversations that I've been having the last few days about Zucker's exit. I know a lot of people blame him for enabling Trump, others praise him for holding the line and even taking Trump to court when--here at CNN.
Zucker, of course, resigned from CNN following revelations of an improper relationship with a colleague. Since his ouster there has been nothing but gushing praise for their puppet master Zucker.
CNN can’t even keep their own dam from breaking, and their ratings collapsing. How could anyone claim with a straight face that they were the fire wall against democracy?

11:30:22 AMDAVID ZURAWIK: Well, you know, I think this is a case of misinformation rather than disinformation.
BRIAN STELTER: Yes.
ZURAWIK: This is something where someone was ignorant. But there's no excuse for Whoopi Goldberg not to be better informed. I mean, in one way there was a Washington Post editorial that said this shows the need for a kind of Critical Race Theory discussion in schools and I agree with that. But there's no reason for her not to be better informed about Jewish identity in this nation and historically.
STELTER: Yeah.
ZURAWIK: I really think, but it is misinformation. It's not like the Republican Party calling the horror of January 6 legitimate political discourse. That's disinformation. But, Brian, we're -- there's too much of it. By the way, CNN is one of the stations -- one of the -- of all the television broadcast networks and cable channels it pushed harder from 2016 to 2020 against Trump and it was part of the fire wall that I think has saved democracy this far under Jeff Zucker.
STELTER: That is a very important piece of context for the conversations that I've been having the last few days about Zucker's exit. I know a lot of people blame him for enabling Trump, others praise him for holding the line and even taking Trump to court when--here at CNN.
