MSNBC’s post-vice presidential debate analysis was apparently being beamed in Wednesday from an alternate universe, because according to their cackling coven of network hosts (Rachel Maddow, Joy Reid, and Nicolle Wallace), Vice President Mike Pence was “anemic,” “flaccid,” “very low energy,” and “just looked limp and lame.” That conflicted with CNN’s shoddy analysis, which found Pence to be a raging sexist.
The analysis from Reid shared some qualities with CNN’s take in that sexism was the word of the day for Pence.
After the trio got done cackling about the fly that landed on Pence’s head, Reid started pushing the sexism narrative. “And every woman who has ever been repeatedly interrupted in a meeting, who’s ever not been allowed to finish a sentence, who’s had a man refuse to follow the rules, and just blow past whatever the norms and the, you know, sort of, guard rails are supposed to be. When then you attempt to do the same are mowed down,” she asserted.
“He repeatedly interrupted her. He demanded – Well, he also repeatedly interrupted the other woman in the room, which is the moderator who seemed to lose control of him,” she continued. She went on to decry how Pence was there to have a debate:
And he also continually demanded that Kamala Harris answer his questions. She wasn't there to answer his questions. She was not there to do whatever it is that Mike Pence told her to do. She was there to talk to the American people and answer Susan Paige's questions.
What she was essentially demanding was for USA Today Washington bureau chief Susan Page to conduct side-by-side interviews. That’s not how a debate works, Joy.
Reid and Maddow then teamed up to fawn for Senator Kamala Harris’s obnoxious face-making:
REID: And she would continually look at him when he would do that and say “I am talking.”
MADDOW: “I’m speaking.”
REID: “I am speaking.” And give that look everybody with a black mama recognizes was usually the prelude to a problem. I recognized it. I think everybody recognized it. She was Mom-ala in that moment.
Shortly thereafter, Wallace finally jumped in with her own brand rambling nonsense made possible because of her advanced case of Trump derangement syndrome.
According to her warped perspective, “The problem tonight is that Vice President Pence appeared flaccid and anemic and that’s going to hurt him with men....This performance will not land well with them.”
She then drove into the usual conspiratorial machinations floating around in her head, wondering if Pence was sick presumably with coronavirus. “I think there are going to be questions about whether he is not feeling that great after this performance because he was anemic,” she proclaimed.
Maddow did her thing a made the connections between her two colleagues’ perspectives:
And I do think a lot of the reason it came through as mush is because we have the structural issue of Pence constantly droning on and trying to drag everything over and steamrollering both his opponent and the moderator in terms of when he could speak, and him being soporific while he was doing it. Very low energy, drone-ie, talking points-ie, condescending, and in other ways just unappealing and, as you say, flaccid.
Wallace added on the morbid assertion that “what if Trump takes a turn for the worse and this guy takes over. He had to look presidential tonight. And he just looked limp and lame.”
MSNBC was truly living in an alternate universe.

MSNBC’s Post Debate Analysis

JOY REID: Yeah. And, I think, if it does anything – apart from the fly being hilarious, and there’ll probably be lots of memes about it tomorrow -- I think the one thing that it could do is cement Donald Trump's biggest problem. His biggest problem is with women, with suburban women. And every woman who has ever been repeatedly interrupted in a meeting, who’s ever not been allowed to finish a sentence, who’s had a man refuse to follow the rules, and just blow past whatever the norms and the, you know, sort of, guard rails are supposed to be. When then you attempt to do the same are mowed down.
Just watch Mike Pence do a softer version of what Donald Trump did last week. He repeatedly interrupted her. He demanded – Well, he also repeatedly interrupted the other woman in the room, which is the moderator who seemed to lose control of him. And he also continually demanded that Kamala Harris answer his questions.
She wasn't there to answer his questions. She was not there to do whatever it is that Mike Pence told her to do. She was there to talk to the American people and answer Susan Paige's questions. And she would continually look at him when he would do that and say “I am talking.”
RACHEL MADDOW: “I’m speaking.”
REID: “I am speaking.” And give that look everybody with a black mama recognizes was usually the prelude to a problem. I recognized it. I think everybody recognized it. She was Mom-ala in that moment. And I think that look and that moment and that sequence of events was very bad for Donald Trump. Because the one thing that Pence was supposed to do and what he did in 2016 was to soften Donald Trump for women voters – for white women voters. He doesn’t have black women, he’ll never get them.
But, you know, to get white suburban women to, at least, consider maybe not abandoning him that voted for him before. This didn’t help.

NICOLLE WALLACE: The problem tonight is that Vice President Pence appeared flaccid and anemic and that’s going to hurt him with men. I mean, the only people that they have in their coalition after last week's barn burner from Trump were the sort of grievance voter that is a vocal and animated part of the Trump base. This performance will not land well with them.
The only time he sprung to life -- and I wonder if – you know – Social media and the background conversation of people in contact with anyone in Trump orbit are all about it’s the steroid rage or just Donald Trump, you know, feeling grumpy about the polls that’s driving his performance.
I think there are going to be questions about whether he is not feeling that great after this performance because he was anemic.
MADDOW: Below – below—Even for him? This isn’t just his style?
WALLACE: The only time that he came to life is when he prosecuted Senator Harris for not answering his question. And again, he hadn’t yet responded in full to a single question from the moderator.
(…)
MADDOW: And I do think a lot of the reason it came through as mush is because we have the structural issue of Pence constantly droning on and trying to drag everything over and steamrollering both his opponent and the moderator in terms of when he could speak, and him being soporific while he was doing it. Very low energy, dronie, talking points-ie, condescending, and in other ways just unappealing and, as you say, flaccid.
WALLACE: And that is not what they needed. I mean, they needed him to come out – Because here’s the other things on voters’ minds, real people; what if Trump takes a turn for the worse and this guy takes over. He had to look presidential tonight. And he just looked limp and lame.
