After Donald Trump struck a trade deal with Mexico on Monday, ABC’s World News Tonight avoided the news of another potential trade war being avoided. On Tuesday, the network finally got around to the topic, but allowed just a scant 37 seconds on the subject. And while CBS This Morning offered a full report, the Today show only managed 25 seconds.
Good Morning America co-host George Stephanopoulos quickly explained: “The President made news yesterday on trade, announcing a new trade deal with Mexico, a revised NAFTA deal. But Canada wasn't part of this and it's not clear you can have a NAFTA deal without Canada.”
Jon Karl rushed through the particulars of the tentative deal:
You can't necessarily have one without Canada or without congressional approval, George. Whatever is ultimately done will likely have to be approved by Congress. The Canadian foreign minister, though, is coming to Washington to meet with members of the administration.
Over on NBC’s Today, Craig Melvin sounded slightly more optimistic, noting: “The President has declared a victory with Mexico.” He added:
The deal, which still requires congressional approval, now forces Canada to the negotiating table. Placing pressure on the nation, President Trump is threatening to impose tariffs on Canadian-made cars if a negotiation cannot be reached. Auto socks soared Monday on the expectation that Canada will sign.
The 25 seconds on NBC and the 0 seconds on ABC stand in contrast to the combined 4 hours of available air time. However, NBC at least covered the story on Monday. ABC didn't bother that night. CBS allowed 21 seconds on Monday evening. To the network’s credit, CBS This Morning on Tuesday followed-up with 3 minutes and 22 seconds.
This Morning co-host Norah O’Donnell explained: “Stocks hit record highs, even though Mr. Trump threatened to place tariffs on Canadian-made cars if Canada does not reach a deal.”
