In a promo for Telemundo’s post-debate coverage, the network suggests that the Democratic nominee, whomever that might be, will “best represent Latinos” against President Donald Trump in the 2020 general election.
Below is the promo which aired immediately after the second part of the first Democratic presidential debate, held in Miami:
NARRATOR: Who won the first great Democratic presidential debate? Who will best represent Latinos? Tonight… 11:30, 10:30 Central. The most complete analysis. Along with the best voices. With guest journalist María Elena Salinas.
SALINAS: Tonight is the opportunity for voters....
NARRATOR: Who (will stand) against Trump? Tonight… 11:30, 10:30 Central. On Telemundo.
It wasn’t that long ago that Telemundo positioned itself as a just-the-facts alternative to Univision’s preachy telling of the news. Now, the network appears to have eschewed that approach and opted to try to outdo Univision’s immigration advocacy.
Telemundo risks falling into the same pit that Univision did in 2016, when it bet everything on Hillary Clinton and lost. It would behoove the network to remember that there is broad diversity within the Hispanic community, and that includes ideological diversity. Hispanics are not a single-issue monolith, and to imply that what was offered on that debate stage is somehow representative of the entire Hispanic community is patently offensive.
Telemundo should know better.
