Univision's recent report on the upcoming implementation of California's Prop 12, which imposes significant restrictions on the sale of pork (and other products) in that state, shows the lengths to which the network will go to protect a liberal policy agenda- even at expense of their viewers' best interests.
Minimizing the huge impact Prop 12 will have on the pockets of Californians - and especially Latinos for whom pork (and eggs) are main staples - once it goes into effect at the beginning of next year, anchor Carolina Sarassa gave a masterpiece class in reporting while keeping essential information from their audiences.
CAROLINA SARASSA, UNIVISION: Do you like bacon? Pay close attention because that food item could disappear from California menus. I’ll explain it to you. This is all due to the rules regarding pork farms and a more humane treatment of these animals. California consumes about 255 million pounds of pork a month and with this new law, they could only process about 45 million pounds- not even half. And this would affect prices with about a 15% increase, which would make pork harder to obtain as well as more expensive.
Sarassa's frivolous report left out any contrasting view about the controversial measure developed by the Humane Society and opposed by leading animal rights organizations including the influential PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). The so-called animal welfare proposition was approved overwhelmingly by voters in 2018.
More notable, however, is Univision’s failure to explain that when Prop 12 goes into effect, in addition to a 15% increase on prices that "would make pork harder to obtain as well as more expensive", California will lose almost all of its pork supply to Iowa, currently the state's main supplier of pork. Goodbye jobs for Hispanics in the food industry (restaurants, processing plants, etc.), since as Sarassa mentioned, “California consumes about 255 million pounds of pork a month and with this new law, they could only process about 45 million pounds- not even half.” There go the Tacos al Pastor, the Puerco Pibil, the Carnitas, Pozole, Ribs, salchichas and more.
Univision’s viewers, and especially those living in California, deserve to know the real effects of liberal policies hailed by the network but that in the end only punish an already financially challenged minority.
