As part of the ongoing and worsening crime and murder waves gripping cities across America, a Marine was shot and wounded in Times Square over the weekend. But even though it was one of 19 shootings that happened in their own backyard, CBS and NBC skipped any mention of the shooting or the rise in crime this summer. Meanwhile, ABC downplayed the Times Square shooting by treating it as an oddity and refused to mention the other shootings.
While none of the network morning newscasts covered the shoot in New York Monday morning, ABC's World News Tonight fill-in anchor Linsey Davis sprinted past the story in a blistering 20 seconds later that evening:
New York City is increasing security following the shooting of a tourist in Times Square. Mayor Bill de Blasio says the NYPD is going to, quote, “flood the zone” with police. Authorities say a 21-year-old Marine was shot and wounded, caught in the middle of an argument between vendors. A 4-year-old girl was also shot and wounded in Times Square last month.
That’s it. That was their fleeting news brief.
Meanwhile, on Fox News Channel’s Special Report, anchor Bret Baier called it like it was. “It was another bloody weekend in several big cities as America's crime crisis worsens this summer,” he announced. He also pointed out the deranged comments from the left. “New York Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says concern over the violence is ‘hysteria.’”
In Fox News’s almost three-minute segment, correspondent Aishah Hasnie went far beyond ABC’s pathetic dash:
A 21-year-old Marine is wheeled away on a stretcher after he’s shot in the back in broad daylight while visiting Times Square with his family. The incident just the latest in a string of violent crime in the big apple. This weekend alone, a total of 23 people were shot in 19 shootings. New York City's Mayor Bill de Blasio announcing he will send in more officers to the area to keep tourists safe.
“In Chicago, 74 people were hurt in 46 shootings over the weekend,” she added.
Perhaps the networks agreed with Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s ridiculous take on the violence. “I also want to make sure that this hysteria, you know, that this doesn't drive a hysteria and that we look in these numbers in context,” she cluelessly proclaimed.
Hasnie also showed how Democrats were so burnt by their lust for defunding the police that they started to claim it was a Republican policy:
CEDRIC RICHMOND (WH senior adviser): When we were in Congress last year trying to pass an emergency relief plan for cities that were cash-strapped and laying off police and firefighters, it was the Republicans who objected to it but the truth is, they defunded the police.
SENATOR TIM SCOTT (R-SC): That is the most ridiculous thing I have heard all year long. [Transition] What we have seen is a 40 percent increase in violent crime in major cities because the Democrats have been defunding the police for the last year.
“And Bret, back here in New York City, police flooded Times Square late last night. We're told there are more than 100 uniformed officers patrolling right now,” Hasnie concluded.

But, in New York tonight, police are adding extra patrols and blockades in midtown, Manhattan to try to keep tourists from being scared off following the shooting of a bystander on Sunday. Correspondent Aishah Hasnie is in New York tonight.

REP. ALEXANDRIA OCASIO-CORTEZ (D-NY): I also want to make sure that this hysteria, you know, that this doesn't drive a hysteria and that we look in these numbers in context.
HASNIE: Her comments come as President Biden tells states and cities to use money from the $350 billion American Rescue Plan for more police and to stop the flow of illegal guns.
PETER DOOCY: But at the time, these local police departments might have a pandemic-related budget shortfall. Not because we need to keep cops on the beat because there is a crime wave.
PRESS SEC. JEN PSAKI: I think that any local department would argue keeping cops on the beat to keep communities safe when they had to, because of budget shortfalls, fire police is something that helps them address crime in their local communities.
HASNIE: Meanwhile Democrats and Republicans are arguing over who’s at fault.
