Did you hear about the sexual harassment accusations made against New York Governor Andrew Cuomo by a former aide? Probably not, if you watch Spanish news programming. Telemundo remains mute about the subject that came to light on Sunday, December 13th. Meanwhile, Univision has given the accusations a mere 60 seconds over two days, while attempting to squelch the story with a solid “He (Cuomo) denies the accusations.”
Watch how anchor Satcha Pretto, from Univision´s morning talk show Despierta America, frames the sexual harassment accusations in a manner most favorable to Cuomo, by giving credence to “memos disseminated by the Associated Press (that) showed that Boylan resigned from office in Cuomo's office when confronted about her own behavior”:
SATCHA PRETTO: New York Governor Andrew Cuomo won´t stay quiet. He denies the accusations of sexual harassment against him. As reported here, former economic adviser Lindsey Boylan, who is now running for president of the Manhattan district, says Cuomo sexually harassed her for years and alleges that many saw him. This morning memos disseminated by the Associated Press showed that Boylan resigned from office in Cuomo's office when confronted about her own behavior.
Apparently, sexual harassment is only newsworthy when the charges are against a Republican. We learned as much while watching the Hispanic networks’ coverage of the circus that enveloped the confirmation of Justice Brett Kavanaugh to the United States Supreme Court, when every unproven and unprovable claim against him was aired extensively. The same goes for the silent treatment offered by the Latino media to Joe Biden accuser Tara Reade, as MRC Latino noted here, and here.
This time around, the accusations came from Lindsey Boylan, an economic advisor who worked for the Cuomo administration from March 2015 to October 2018. Boylan is now running for Manhattan borough president, so the issue was reduced to a matter of politics with the accuser coming off as a disgruntled former staffer.
It is much easier for the liberal Spanish-speaking media to follow the official DNC talking points than to go through the trouble of actually presenting two sides of a story, in this case, one of great concern to women.
