“Juice” singer Lizzo’s peppy embrace of herself as a confident obese woman may be a fun (albeit bizarre) pop culture fad in the short term, but one famous weight loss coach reminds us that it might not be so positive in the long term.
Lizzo’s fans and the PC crowd are having none of it. Many are calling former The Biggest Loser host and fitness personality Jilian Michaels “fatphobic” over her warning.
Michaels got real about Lizzo in an interview on Buzzfeed show, “AM to DM” recently, providing some sobering perspective for the woman who embraces weighing somewhere around 400 lbs.
“I love her music 100%. I don’t know anything about her, I’m sure she’s a cool, awesome chick,” Michaels said of Lizzo in a larger discussion of health and wellness. The host responded, clearly pursuing the “body-positivity” narrative: “Yeah and I love that they’re putting images out there that we normally don’t get to see — of bodies that we don’t get to see being celebrated.”
Jillian then really jumped in: “But why are we celebrating her body? Why does it matter? That’s what I’m saying. Why aren’t we celebrating her music?” A fair question, if rather naive. Fat, like just about everything else, is becoming a woke identity, and woe unto those who would point out the health consequences.
Michaels said, “It isn’t gonna be awesome when she gets diabetes. I’m just being honest.” Uh oh. Lizzo fans jumped at the opportunity to label her a “fat shamer.” Many other folks tried to beat the argument with anecdotes of “Only diabetics I've known were skinnier than me! Sometimes, ppl are just big.”
Pro-abort loud mouth and actress Jameela Jamil blasted Michaels in a tweet, claiming, “MY WHOLE DAMN THIN FAMILY HAS DIABETES AND HIGH CHOLESTEROL AND PROBLEMS WITH OUR JOINTS. Why is This woman acting like she’s an MRI?”
But obesity is directly linked to a multitude of health issues like Type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure, which are killers. We know there are outliers but obesity is a national scourge that directly translates to higher American deaths. It’s like normalizing smoking and alcoholism. Also “why” does Michaels have expertise? Well she has a fitness career, for one.
But alas, Michaels was forced to publicly clarify and soften her comments as they were too tough for many. She tweeted a message which read, “As I’ve stated repeatedly, we are all beautiful, worthy, and equally deserving,” adding that however, “there are serious health consequences that come with obesity — heart disease, diabetes, cancer to name a few.”
If Michaels' efforts to get Americans fit are emotionally disturbing then we better hold Michelle Obama accountable for years of serious trauma inflicted on kids who just wanted to be 300 lbs at age twelve.
